PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle) air conditioning uses an electric compressor powered by the high-voltage battery, allowing it to cool the cabin even when the gas engine is off, unlike traditional hybrids. Power draw is significant (often 1-3 kW, potentially more for initial cooling) but manageable, with many PHEVs offering preconditioning via apps to set temperature before driving, saving energy and maximizing EV range. Power consumption varies, but systems like the Outlander PHEV's can have cooling capacities around 5,500W (5.5 kW). \
How it Works
Electric Compressor: An electric motor drives the compressor, drawing power from the main high-voltage battery pack.
Energy Source: This allows for cooling or heating the cabin (preconditioning) while the engine is off, or running the AC in full EV mode.
Power Draw: While running, it draws substantial power (e.g., 1-3 kW for maintenance, 3-5 kW for initial cooling), reducing battery range, but it's generally efficient.
Power & Performance
Cooling Capacity: A system might offer around 5,500W (5.5 kW) of cooling power, similar to larger residential units, according to one technical document.
Range Impact: Running the AC uses energy, but preconditioning while plugged in minimizes this impact on driving range.
Key Features & Considerations
Preconditioning: Use smartphone apps to cool or heat the cabin before you get in, often while still plugged in, which is energy-efficient.
