Toyota’s Molten Metal Turned Lump Shows Post-Quake Challenge
Iwaki Diecast Co.’s 15 electric furnaces shut down as the March 11 earthquake knocked out power, turning 12 tons of aluminum bubbling at 670-degrees Celsius into solid lumps of metal.The supplier to Toyota Motor Corp. (7203) lost 440 pounds of spilled aluminum and a magnesium die-cast plant washed away by the tsunami that followed in Yamamoto, Miyagi prefecture. Diesel generators were brought in to restore power and it took four days to melt the blocks so parts production could resume on March 22, Managing Director Hiroto Yokoyama said.
“We are almost back to where we were before the earthquake,” Yokoyama said in an interview at the factory. “But the big question is, what will happen this summer?”
A power shortage threatens to hamper the northern Tohoku region’s economic recovery following the magnitude-9 earthquake and tsunami, which led to damages estimated to be as much as 25 trillion yen ($299 billion). Japan faces possible blackouts in the coming months after the natural disasters reduced national power-generating capacity by 8 percent.
[spoiler=...:3apgwe90]The combined capacity of nuclear, oil and coal-fired generators, including the Fukushima Dai-Ichi station, halted after March 11 totaled 22,422.6 megawatts, according to a Bloomberg calculation based on statements from Tokyo Electric Power Co. and Tohoku Electric Power Co., which supplies power in the northern region.
Tokyo and eight nearby prefectures may have a shortage of 15,000 megawatts should temperatures this summer approach last year’s level, according to Prime Minister Naoto Kan’s government.

The government may restrict power supply to large users by as much as 25 percent this summer and to households by up to 20 percent, it said last week.Electricity shortages raise costs for manufacturers, including Iwaki Diecast, forced to pay for alternative sources. Diesel generators cost the company 400,000 yen a day for 3,000 liters of gasoline, Yokoyama said.
Toyota has bought wheels for gear torque convertors from Iwaki since 2008, and when production failed, the carmaker increased orders from another supplier in Toyoma prefecture, said Kozo Sakurai, managing director at Toyota Motor Tohoku Corp. in Miyagi.

Toyota Tohoku, which produces the torque convertors for the Camry, Corolla and other models, is also concerned about power shortages, Sakurai said. The company may start a 3 p.m. production shift at a later time to avoid peak demand, he said.
“And of course, administrative staff won’t be able to use air-conditioning,” Sakurai said in an interview at the factory.
Carmakers may also cooperate through a rotating production schedule to save power, Toyota has said. The Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association, the industry’s primary trade group, is expected to coordinate measures.
“The possibility of blackouts or limits to production has me extremely worried,” Miyagi prefecture Governor Yoshihiro Murai said at his office in Sendai. “It would be very damaging for the manufacturing sector.”
Toyota
Production at Toyota Tohoku will be at 40 percent of capacity through at least the end of the month, as dictated by Toyota, Sakurai said. Toyota has said it lost 260,000 units of production from March 14 through April 8 after closing 18 factories because of shortages of electronic parts, rubber and plastics.
Toyota shares fell 0.9 percent to close at 3,240 yen in Tokyo. The shares have dropped 11 percent since March 10, the day before the earthquake.
Cuts in production from limited parts and power supply may cut Toyota’s operating profit by 200 billion yen in the current fiscal year, said Koji Endo, an auto analyst at Advanced Research Japan in Tokyo.
For Northeast Japan, the electricity shortage may be eased by a thermal plant restarting in Niigata prefecture in early June and a new plant in Niigata that will start in July, said Sota Notsu, a spokesman for Tohoku Electric in Sendai, the capital of Miyagi.
**Aomori Nuclear Plant **
A nuclear-power plant in Aomori prefecture, which suffered no damage from the earthquake and has not been operating, would ease shortages, Murai said.
The Higashi Dori nuclear plant shut down on Feb. 6 for routine inspection, Notsu said. The plant was scheduled to restart in July, a plan likely to be delayed as it considers safety issues and any changes in the central government’s nuclear energy policy, he said.
Japan’s Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency raised the severity rating of its nuclear crisis to 7, the highest level, matching the 1986 Chernobyl disaster, after increasing radiation from the Fukushima Dai-Ichi plant prompted the government to widen the evacuation zone.
“It’s easy to become hysterical and say nuclear energy is bad,” Murai said. “But we need to think about this calmly and rationally.”[/spoiler:3apgwe90]

Some time ago I sent an E-mail to all “EES Medewerkers” recommending David MacKay’s book “Sustainable Energy – without the hot air”.
At present the Fukushima drama results in much negative publicity on nuclear power. In that context it is very interesting to read MacKay’s data on the public risks of different power sources. MacKay compares those risks in terms of deaths per GWy (gigawatt-year, or 8.77.109 kwh). It turns out (Fig 24.11) that Nuclear and Hydro come out as the lowest, much lower than coal and oil. MacKay says about that conclusion: “Please don’t get me wrong: I’m not trying to be pro-nuclear. I’m just pro-arithmetic”. Chernobyl is of course included in this comparison, Fukushima not yet.
The three most relevant pages (168, !69 and!&%) of MacKay’s book I combined in the file MacKaypages.pdf. The entire book is of course available via http://www.withouthotair.com.I also include a picture which recently appeared in Physics Today. The file SolarCorona.pdf shows strong activity in the corona around the Sun; short wavelength emission and complicated magnetic fields.
A “boiling” fusion reactor, far enough from us to be pretty safe for us and close enough to make life on Earth possible. In addition to my earlier mail (but only to you): Fortunately, the design of a fast breeder, Sodium cooled, was not implemented in Fukushima (please ask Shima what Fuku means). The consequences could be more disastrous. In fact, such a design was built in Germany (Kalkar), but never taken into operation. Instead, it was converted to 'Kernwasser Wunderland'. If you translate it in English, it would be something like 'Nuclear Water Wonderland'. And that is what the Japanese should do. They have the nuclear water already, and you only have to use it for Efteling*-like attractions. Even you could advertize under cancer patients, giving them the choice of having irradiation treatment at hospitals or to go to Fukushima and being treated during swimming. You could also play scenes of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Human size rabbits will arise automatically by mutation. An attraction park with a radius of 20-30km would generate sufficient income to restore the region in no time.

Περιορισμοί στη χρήση των Δημόσιων Χώρων, ηλεκτρική σύνδεση των μονάδων ανά ζεύγη με εξωτερικές πηγές για διασφάλιση παροχής ενέργειας (στερνή μου γνώση να σ' είχα πρώτα...), αυξομειώσεις των θερμοκρασιών στο SFP της μονάδας 4, σειρά από τεχνικές λύσεις (εναλλάκτες θερμότητας, ρομπότ), χάρτες ακτινοβολίας (να μην την πατήσουμε) και εργασίες ενίσχυσης της αντισεισμικής προστασίας για την SFP της μονάδας 4.

Πτώση γενικώς των τιμών του ιωδίου στο νερό τόσο πλησίον του σταθμού όσο και στα περί της περιοχής των δύο σταθμών. Πάντως τιμές της τάξης των 200 Bq/lt (0.23Βq/cm3) μετριούνται ακόμα πλησίον του σταθμού.

Το πρόβλημα πια εστιάζεται στην επαρχία της Fukushima και ειδικώς στις περιοχές του Litate & Fukushima. Είναι πράγματι ειρωνεία της τύχης το γεγονός ότι η πόλη του Minami-Shauma παρουσιάζει πολύ μικρότερες τιμές ραδιενέργειας αν και η πλησιέστερη στο σταθμό.

Φωτογραφίες από το εσωτερικό του σταθμού. Οι τιμές είναι αρκετά υψηλές αν και μικρότερες του 0.1% των 300 SV/h που είχαν μετρηθεί στο Chernobyl (μέγιστη τιμή 0.057 SV/h ή 57mSV/h). Τα 4.1 mSV/h για τη μονάδα 2 είναι παραπλανητικά καθώς λόγω της υγρασίας δεν ήταν δυνατό να συνεχίσουν τα ρομπότ.

Από το Chernobyl η συνολική εκπομπή μόνον από Ιώδιο ήταν 1760 PBq ενώ άλλα 85 PBq ήταν οι εκπομπές του Cs. Είχαμε δε και 6,000 kg !!! καυσίμου σε μορφή σκόνης το οποίο και αποδεσμεύτηκε....

Spiralling costs of decommissioning blamed on 'unforeseen expenses'
**The cost of decommissioning ageing nuclear power sites has risen 'rapidly' in the past few years by £12bn to £73bn, according to an official report.

The National Audit Office (NAO) said costs were rising, even for the most imminent work. It said the industry faced 'significant challenges'.The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority admitted costs had risen, but predicted they would fall in the longer term.
Greenpeace says the uncertainty makes building more reactors 'reckless'.
The estimated £73bn cost of decommissioning the UK's old nuclear sites is 18% higher than an estimate given in 2003.
The NAO report said the sum partly reflected 'a more complete assessment of the range of work needed to be done'.
Sir John Bourn, head of the NAO, said while there was a better idea about 'the scale of the task', the 'estimates of costs to the taxpayer had continued to rise'.
'Unforeseen expenses'
Edward Leigh MP, Conservative chairman of the Public Accounts Committee, said that while the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) had 'come a long way in planning what needs to be done', it was 'worrying' that estimates for future work were still rising.
'Decommissioning relies in part on income from increasingly unreliable plants, and unforeseen expenses continually pop up.
'These factors combine and disrupt plans, slowing down the decommissioning process,' he said.
Environmental campaigners said the government should heed the warnings of the NAO report.
Nathan Argent, nuclear campaigner for Greenpeace, said: 'That we can't properly estimate the cost of dealing with our legacy wastes, let alone resolve what to do with them, underscores the fact that plans to build a second generation of new reactors are pure recklessness.'
In a statement the NDA said that in less that three years since its creation the authority had gained a 'detailed understanding' of the sites.
It said it had managed to deliver £300m more work than budgeted, whilst also driving 'fundamental change' within the industry.
'Costs of the clean-up programme were always expected to rise in the early years ... [and] we remain confident that ... we will stabilise and then ultimately reduce the UK's nuclear liability,' it said.
