Egypt swears in new ministers
Key portfolios in cabinet reshuffle remain unchanged, prompting Muslim Brotherhood to dismiss reform as 'an illusion'.
Egypt's key portfolios of defence, interior, foreign, finance and justice were unchanged in a cabinet reshuffle, state television confirmed. The list of new ministers that was presented on Tuesday included changing the veteran oil minister, as well as introducing politicians who had been opposed to the rule of Hosni Mubarak, who stepped down from office after widespread protests.
Field Marshal Mohamed Hussein Tantawi, who leads the ruling military council and has been defence minister for about 20 years, took the new ministers' oaths of office.
But the Muslim Brotherhood, the country's biggest opposition group, said the new cabinet showed that Mubarak's 'cronies' still controlled the country's politics.
'This new cabinet is an illusion,' Essam el-Erian, a senior Brotherhood member, said. 'It pretends it includes real opposition but in reality this new government puts Egypt under the tutelage of the West.'
'The main defence, justice, interior and foreign ministries remain unchanged, signalling Egypt's politics remain in the hands of Mubarak and his cronies,' el-Erian said.
Mubarak reshuffled his cabinet shortly after protests erupted on January 25 in a bid to assuage anger against his 30-year rule, but rage continued to build until his ouster on February 11.
The Brotherhood and youth protesters had demanded that all Mubarak's ministers must be changed in the new government sworn in ahead of parliamentary and presidential elections.
The latest reshuffle brought into the cabinet a few opposition figures including Yehia el-Gamal, deputy prime minister, the Wafd party's Mounir Abdel Nour as tourism minister, and Tagammu party's Gowdat Abdel-Khaleq as minister of social solidarity and social justice.
Both Wafd and Tagammu had often been close to Mubarak's government.
The Centre for Trade Unions and Workers Services (CTUWS) said the government's appointment of Ismail Ibrahim Fahmy as new labour minister showed it continued to 'co-opt formal labour unions and the labour ministry', it said in a statement.
Fahmy was the treasurer of the General Union for Workers' Syndicates in Egypt.
'We warn of the dire consequences of defying the will of the workers and their legitimate right to enjoy union rights,' CTUWS said.
Egyptian online democracy activists called for a demonstration on Tuesday to demand the removal of the country's interim government, saying it contains too many old faces.
'The call for the million-man march on Friday would show people's anger and frustration,' the Brotherhood's el-Erian said.[/spoiler:2n9lmmu5]
Στην Υεμένη η κατάσταση είναι έκκρυθμη αλλά όχι στο επίπεδο Αιγύπτου:
Students killed at Yemen rally
Protests turn deadly as the president's supporters open fire on anti-government demonstrators in the capital, Sanaa.
Two students have been killed in Yemen after more than 1,000 anti-government protesters rallied near Sanaa University.Witnesses said supporters of Ali Abdullah Saleh, the Yemeni president, opened fire at the protesters late on Tuesday night.
Tom Finns, the editor of Yemen Times, quoted a doctor as saying the two students died from bullet wounds and that 20 others were injured, some by bullets and some by rocks being thrown.
Finns told Al Jazeera that police had surrounded the scene and at least five ambulances had left carrying the injured.
Earlier in the day, clashes broke out as a crowd of about 4,000 anti-government protesters moved close to where Saleh's loyalists were bunkered down.
About 1,000 students had spent a second night camped at a square near Sanaa University, dubbed Al-Huriya (Liberty) Square, where they have erected a huge tent.
Across the country, tens of thousands rallied on Tuesday calling for Saleh's resignation.
Continued violence
Demonstrators, inspired by revolts in Tunisia and Egypt, have been protesting for almost two weeks against the rule of Saleh, in power since 1978.
On Monday, witnesses said a teenager was killed and four people wounded in a clash with soldiers in the country's southern city of Aden.
Officers stood by as demonstrators marched in the eastern town of al-Shiher, chanting 'Down, down with Saleh'.
In Taiz, Yemen's second-largest city, thousands of protesters marched in the Safir Square. An activist, Ahmed Ghilan, said hundreds have been camping in the square for more than a week, renaming it 'Freedom Square'.
In Aden, schools closed, most government employees were not working and many shops were closed as hundreds gathered for another round of protests.
But mounting pressure has so far yielded little result as Saleh insists he will only step down after national elections are held in 2013.
He has said protesters demanding an end to his rule could not achieve their goal through 'anarchy and killing'.
He said on Monday that he had ordered troops not to fire at anti-government protesters, except in self-defence, but medical officials say at least 12 people had been killed in demonstrations before the latest deaths were reported on Tuesday.
A spokesman for the opposition rebuffed Saleh's offer of dialogue, while an influential group of Muslim religious leaders called for a national unity government that would lead the country to elections.[/spoiler:2n9lmmu5]

Iranian navy ships exit Suez Canal
First such passage through Egyptian channel since 1979 Islamic revolution is condemned by Israel as a 'provocation'.
Two Iranian naval ships have passed through Egypt's Suez Canal into the Mediterranean Sea heading for Syria, a source at the canal authority told the Reuters news agency.
The ships entered the canal at 03:45 GMT on Tuesday and passed into the Mediterranean at 13:30GMT, the Suez Canal Authority source said.
'Their return is expected to be on March 3,' the source said.
The two vessels, Alvand, a patrol frigate and Kharg, a supply ship, are the first naval vessels going through the canal since Iran's 1979 Islamic revolution, after which diplomatic ties between Egypt and Iran were strained.
Egypt's ruling military council, facing its first diplomatic challenge since taking power on February 11, approved the vessels' passage through the canal.
The Suez Canal cuts through Egypt and allows shipping to pass from the Middle East to Europe and vice versa without going around the southern tip of Africa. The canal is a vital global trading route and a major source of revenue for the Egyptian authorities.
Israel takes a 'grave view' of the passage of the ships.
On Sunday, after a weekly meeting of his cabinet, Binyamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, denounced the ships' arrival in the region as an Iranian power play.
And last week, the prospect of the Suez crossing was described by Avigdor Lieberman, Israel's far-right foreign minister, as a 'provocation' by Iran.
But an Iranian diplomat said that: 'This will be a routine visit, within international law, in line with the co-operation between Iran and Syria, who have strategic ties.
'The ships will spend a few days in Syrian ports for training purposes, having already visited several countries including Oman and Saudi Arabia.'
The decision was a difficult one for Egypt's interim government as Cairo is an ally of the US and has a peace treaty with Israel.
However, Egypt's official MENA news agency has reported that the request for the ships to transit the canal was granted because they were not carrying weapons or nuclear and chemical materials.
The 1,500-tonne Alvand is normally armed with torpedoes and anti-ship missiles, while the larger 33,000-tonne Kharg has a crew of 250 and facilities for up to three helicopters, Iran's official Fars news agency said.[/spoiler:2n9lmmu5]
