McLaren Mercedes SLR-Roadster
Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Roadster:
An open-air adventure for all the senses
Stuttgart, May 04, 2007
Mercedes-Benz will in future also market its SLR McLaren super sports car in the form of a roadster with a top. In common with Formula 1 vehicles of today, it, too, will be made of carbon fibre, a material that will endow the vehicle with a very high degree of safety as well as extreme torsional stiffness at the same high level as the coupé version. This gives rise, in combination with the racing-type chassis, to outstanding ride characteristics.
The maximum speed of the new high-performance sports car, which is powered by an AMG V8 compressor engine delivering 460 kW/626 hp, is 332 km/h, therefore at the same high level as the coupé. Although, thanks to its fully retractable top, the Roadster offers undiluted open-air driving pleasure in the highest performance class, its occupants in no way lose out in terms of comfort or the vehicle’s suitability for everyday use. Consequently, the new Roadster opens up a new dimension in refinement for open-top super sports cars.
Like the coupé version, the new Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Roadster once again unites the legend of the successful SLR racing models from the 1950s with the innovative technology of modern Formula 1 vehicles from the Vodafone-McLaren-Mercedes team. Typical stylistic elements, such as the arrow-shaped tip of the Formula 1 Silver Arrow, establish a visual link with the racing cars. The SLR leg-end of the 50s lives on stylistically in the distinctive lateral louvers, side pipes behind the front wheels and the wide-opening gullwing doors.
The new Roadster benefits technically from the many years of experience of Mercedes-Benz and its Formula 1 partner McLaren. Apart from two aluminium engine frames, its body is made entirely of carbon-fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) materials, making the vehicle an exception among high-performance sports cars. Especially for the Roadster, complex carbon-fibre technology has been intelligently further developed for the monocoque chassis. The result is low weight, exemplary energy absorption and, therefore, extremely high occupant safety as well as a degree of torsional stiffness hitherto unattained in open-top vehicles. This leads to outstanding ride characteristics of the kind otherwise found only in closed-top super sports cars.
The puristic top is suitable for high speeds
The exceptional qualities of the Roadster are attributable also to the fully retractable top, which blends harmoniously into the flowing lines of the SLR McLaren. Its newly developed roof material, which is available in three different colours, not only guarantees complete suitability for everyday use in all weathers, but also endows the high-performance sports car with characteristics that are exception-ally unusual in a roadster. For example, at 332 km/h, the maximum speed is at the high level of the coupé version. Conversation is still possible at well over 200 km/h on open-air journeys thanks to the favourable aeroacoustics.
The roof opens and closes semi-automatically in less than ten seconds, thereby combining the desire for convenience with the puristic character of the roadster. To open, the roof merely needs to be unlocked from the windscreen frame and be briefly raised, after which it folds away electrically. Since an aluminium cover is integrated into its front section, the roof elegantly closes off the top when re-tracted.
Sophisticated aerodynamics and racing-type chassis
In the wind tunnel, the Roadster has been optimised for high speeds with regard to handling, aeroacoustics and aerodynamics. It likewise employs the aerodynamic concept already known from the coupé version, featuring an airbrake integrated into the access lid and a diffusor in the rear bumper to provide increased downforce on the rear axle.
The open two-seater is equipped with a racing-type chassis featuring high-performance carbon-ceramic brake discs, thereby setting extremely high stan-dards. Its front-mid-engine provides for optimum weight distribution. With 460 kW/626 hp and a maximum torque of 780 Nm, the AMG V8 compressor engine, which is coupled to an AMG Speedshift R five-speed automatic transmission, accelerates the Roadster from zero to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds.
Unique safety and exclusive fittings
A high degree of safety is ensured by unique carbon-fibre crash elements, steel-reinforced A-pillars and two fixed roll-over bars. The comprehensive specification also features adaptive airbags, knee and side airbags as well as seat belt tensioners and a tyre-pressure monitoring system.
The exclusive standard equipment includes semi-aniline-leather-upholstered carbon-fibre bucket seats which can be individually adapted to the driver and front passenger by means of differently sized seat pads; dual-zone automatic air-conditioning; a high-quality BOSE premium sound system; a multifunction sport steering wheel with gear-change paddles, and a navigation system with integral radio and CD player.
The new Mercedes-Benz SLR Roadster, like the coupé, is produced at McLaren’s Formula 1 factory in Woking, England, in accordance with stringent Mercedes-Benz quality criteria and will be available as from September 2007Pics

First Drive: 2007 Mercedes-Benz CL500
Describing the development of the new 2007 Mercedes-Benz CL500 coupe, Lead Designer Holger Hutzenlaub does something people from Mercedes rarely do. He admits a mistake.
'We may have been a little too timid with the design of the previous-generation CL,' he said. 'This time around we wanted to make the car look more assured, more powerful, more...well...uh....' We can tell he wants to say something like 'badass,' but he settles on 'confident' and moves on.
Hutzenlaub is right about the previous-generation CL500. Its exterior design was understated to the point of being forgettable. The fact that it was an otherwise flawless coupe wasn't always enough. Now that Hutzenlaub's team has given the new CL550 a more memorable shape, all the engineers had to do was keep up.
Big car, small streets
The engineers at Mercedes-Benz rarely get left behind at anything, so it's no surprise that the CL550 feels just about perfect a half hour into a drive on the Spanish island of Mallorca. The narrow, shoulderless streets make the car feel massive, mostly because it is. At 199.4 inches in length, this new CL is 3 inches longer, nearly an inch taller and slightly wider than the previous model. Those numbers put it about 9 inches longer than a BMW 6 Series and only about 5 inches shy of the S-Class sedan.Weight is up, too. At 4360 pounds, the CL550 is more than 500 pounds heavier than the 650Ci and has nearly 700 pounds on the Jaguar XK. Program Chief Hans-Dieter Multhaupt says the extra pounds come from additional safety equipment, more interior features and the bulked-up hardware needed to give the CL even better performance.
The biggest chunk of that hardware is Mercedes' new 5.4-liter V8 and the seven-speed automatic transmission that goes with it. Together they shave nearly a second off the previous CL's 0-60 time of 6.3 seconds, according to Mercedes. Sending 382 horsepower and 391 pound-feet of torque through the rear wheels, the new engine is one of Mercedes' cleanest, most fuel-efficient V8s ever, while the gearbox not only offers seven speeds, it also has three shift programs: Comfort, Sport and Manual.
Adjustable transmissions are nothing new, but in this CL the system is integrated with Mercedes' second-generation Active Body Control (ABC) suspension which is now standard. Going from Normal to Sport not only gets you more aggressive shifts, it stiffens up the adjustable struts and quickens the engine's throttle response. Manual mode delivers even quicker shifts and gives you full control of the gearchanges through steering-wheel-mounted buttons. Throttle and ABC settings remain the same.
The ABCs of cornering
On wide-open stretches we leave it in Comfort mode and that's what we get. There's no road noise or wind howl as the CL basically goes into Lexus mode at 75 mph. It's one of the few situations where the CL feels light on its feet, as it glides over rough pavement without feeling overly soft. This is the kind of driving this coupe was made for, and if we never hit a turn we would call it perfect and leave it at that. Then we approach the hills north of Palma de Mallorca, where we set it to Sport just before hitting a set of tight switchbacks. Mercedes says the new ABC system reduces body roll by 45 percent, which is not bad considering it uses no antiroll bars. Combine this with slightly wider front and rear tracks and the big coupe barely tilts a degree or two, even when the tires are squealing. Sitting dead flat makes it easier to keep your bearings in tight turns, but without the physical sensation of leaning over, it's hard to tell when you're getting close to the limits.
The CL's weight is obvious here. On long, sweeping turns the grip from the standard 18-inch wheels and tires runs out quickly, and when you transition from one tight corner to the next, even the sophisticated four-link aluminum suspension can't always make it graceful. The four-piston front brakes fare much better, as their drilled and ventilated rotors provide plenty of bite with little fade.
A new variable-ratio, speed-sensitive steering system is designed to provide better on-center feel at higher speeds while maintaining one-finger effort in parking lots. It was perfect on the highway, but feels a little light in the mountains. The BMW 6 Series and Jaguar XK coupes deliver better road feel. We doubt most CL owners will notice.
Switching to manual mode allows us to flip through all those gears in the transmission and give the engine a workout. There's a good reserve of power at any engine speed and the shift buttons on the back of the steering wheel work quickly enough. Problem is, like most V8s in this class it's so refined you barely feel or hear much from under the hood, draining some of the fun out of the drive. Other manufacturers have addressed this by actively enhancing their engine's exhaust notes to reinsert some personality; the CL could use the same.
A flagship cabin
There's no need to liven up the CL's interior. It's carried directly over from the S-Class sedan and it has the kind of clean, elegant design you expect. There's not a single piece of trim that doesn't look and feel like it belongs in a $100K coupe, and you can upgrade it further with Alcantara trim and custom colors.Like the S-Class, the transmission shifter is now just a small stalk on the steering wheel so there's less clutter and a decent set of cupholders. There's an iDrive-like interface, but the menus are clearer and the controller easier to use.
Although the doors are big, they open easily and with none of the complex hinges used in the previous model. Seatbelts integrated into the seats themselves do away with the CL's power-retracting belt holders, another one of the previous model's oddities. The standard seats feature plenty of adjustment, and of course there are optional versions with heating, ventilation and massage functions.
There's more room in back, too. Adults could use the rear seats for short drives without worrying about how they're going to pry themselves out later. Trunk space has also been increased slightly for a total of 17.4 cubic feet, more than enough room for a weekend's worth of baggage.
No mistakes this time around
Most of our time in the CL was spent on roads that rarely complemented its size or intent, yet we still had a hard time finding anything wrong with the big coupe. It looks better, goes faster and feels more comfortable than its nearly perfect predecessor. There's too much weight on board to throw around quickly, but if you want light buy a Lotus. If you want a luxurious, quiet and fast GT, the CL550 is as good as any car on the road. And thanks to Mr. Hutzenlaub, it looks good doing it.Edmunds attended a manufacturer-sponsored event, to which selected members of the press were invited, to facilitate this report.

The Mercedes CL600 is an amazing super-Coupe which outclasses the Bentley in almost every area
By Chris Thorp April 2007
Buy a Mercedes CL and you are making a big statement. Measuring more than five metres long, costing around half the average UK house price and offering cosy comfort for four, it's as opulent as motoring can be.
As an overall package, the old-shape CL could never justify its larger-than-life statistics. Now based on the latest S-Class platform, the all-new coupé flagship has arrived with far more capable underpinnings - yet can it match the world's finest GTs?
A two-door version of the S-Class is never going to be small, but the latest CL is vast. Designers have given it dramatic sweeping curves and mus-cular wheelarches, yet there's no get-ting away from the coupé's sheer scale. It's not unpleasant to look at, but it's not exactly attractive, either. Inside, the Merc is likely to get less criticism, sharing the dash of the luxury saloon. Build quality is sublime and the very latest technology is fitted.
Where the CL really begins to shine is on the road - particularly with a bi-turbo V12 engine under the bonnet. Push the unusually long-travel accelerator to the floor and it's as though you've activated a high-speed winch attached to the front of the car.
Thanks to Mercedes' latest chassis and suspension technology, the coupé can automatically tailor its handling and ride to your driving style. Given the CL's girth, it is surprisingly nimble when cornering, while the ride quality is also superb at any speed.
The entry-level V8-powered CL500 is priced at £79,550 and the sporty AMG model weighs in at £103,450, while if you want 12 cylinders, you'll require a mighty £107,097. There is no doubt this Mercedes is enormously expensive - but it's one of the most capable cars on the planet.

I knew it was too good to be true. Our “insider” is reporting that the C-Class will not have the reported 500hp, but a bit less - 450hp. By so many horses, the 50 shouldn’t make a big difference, but it would have been nice to have the extra power. The interesting and logical reason for having less than 500hp is that they don’t want the C-Class to have more power than the E63 AMG. Every E-Class owner would probably be complaining that they paid $20k more and are slower than a C-Class driver.
The “insider” is also reports that the front bumper will look different from the normal bodykit, and that the hood will have more muscle. No doubt that this will make the car look different than the Avantage and Elagance, giving the AMG owners a unique design that will make it stand out next to the regular C-Class vehicles.
At least Auto-Motor-und-Sport is right about the 4 exhausts, but I could have guessed that one too. Overall, the AMG version will look similar to the picture above, which is great news.

CL 65 AMG

CL 65 AMG 40th Anniversary
Also Available as '40th Anniversary' Limited Edition Model
Two special events make 2007 a particularly significant year for Mercedes-AMG: the arrival of a new top model – the CL 65 AMG high-performance coupe with its 450 kW /612 hp V12 engine – which rounds off the unique AMG range and which also, in '40th Anniversary' limited edition guise, marks a special anniversary: the high-performance brand of the Mercedes Car Group (MCG) celebrates its 40th birthday in 2007.Another dream car has joined the AMG model range in the form of the new CL 65 AMG. The powerful AMG 6.0-litre V12 biturbo engine familiar from the S 65 AMG and SL 65 AMG twelve-cylinder models delivers a truly impressive driving experience in the exclusive high-performance coupe. Its maximum output of 450 kW/612 hp and maximum torque of 1000 Newton meters are reflected in its outstanding performance data: the CL 65 AMG attains 100 km/h in 4.4 seconds and reaches the 200-km/h mark in 13.3 seconds. Its maximum speed is 250 km/h (electronically limited).
Standard features include AMG body styling, 20-inch AMG forged wheels, the unique AMG interior and highly advanced technology, such as AMG sports suspension, based on the Active Body Control system, and the anticipatory occupant protection system PRE-SAFE. The AMG high-performance brake system with new double-frame sliding calipers offers maximum deceleration without fading: under emergency braking from 100 km/h at the permissible gross vehicle weight, the CL 65 AMG comes to a standstill in 35.6 meters; this represents a maximum deceleration of 11.1 m/s2.
'40th Anniversary' Edition with AMG Alubeam Paint Finish
In order to mark the 40th anniversary of Mercedes-AMG – the high-performance brand of the Mercedes Car Group – in suitably glittering style, the CL 65 AMG is also being offered as a '40th Anniversary' limited edition model. A new type of paint finish reflects the special status of this exclusive version, which is restricted to just 40 vehicles for the whole world. This exceptional AMG coupe is the very first series-production Mercedes to feature AMG Alubeam, a unique paint finish which has previously only been seen on a handful of Mercedes show cars.A world first, this new process causes the paint to gleam like liquid metal. The color, which seems to be stretched over the vehicle body like a metallic skin, emphasizes the compelling lines of the large Mercedes coupe more effectively than any other paint finish while the light plays on them in a way calculated to make them even more vivid. This is made possible by the use of pigment particles which measure just 30 to 50 nanometers and are therefore able to be incorporated in the surface of the paint much more evenly. As a result, the light is reflected much more intensively and the luster of the paintwork is enhanced. To put this into perspective, conventional paintwork pigments measure between 100 and 300 nanometers.
This fine pigment structure calls for a perfect body surface which the Mercedes experts achieve by means of an elaborate preparatory process before the actual painting stage. It goes without saying that AMG Alubeam also has a clear coat with enhanced scratch resistance which offers greater protection from environmental influences.
Superb Interior Ambience with Special Appointments
The superbly styled interior also makes an impressive statement: the CL 65 AMG '40th Anniversary' features two-tone EXCLUSIVE PASSION all-Nappa-leather upholstery with a diamond pattern, a color-coordinated Alcantara roof lining and embossed V12 logos on the front head restraints. The airbag unit of the AMG ergonomic sports steering wheel is also finished in Nappa leather. High-quality trim elements made from genuine carbon add a decidedly sporty touch. The '40th Anniversary' lettering on the center console confirms the exceptional character of the new coupe and at the same time serves as a reminder of the incomparable history of AMG. Further evidence of the car's highly exclusive status is provided by the 'ONE OUT OF 40' badge on the hand rest of the COMAND controller.
Designed by the specialists of the AMG PERFORMANCE STUDIO, which was set up in 2006, the '40th Anniversary' CL 65 AMG belongs to the exclusive 'Editions' category of vehicles whose distinctive look and feel differentiate them from the series-production models and give them their special appeal.
V12 Biturbo Engine: Dynamic Performance at the Highest Level
The highest level of performance is guaranteed by the AMG 6.0-litre V12 biturbo engine with its displacement of 5980 cc: its maximum output of 450 kW/612 hp is maintained between 4800 and 5100 rpm while the maximum torque of 1000 Newton meters (electronically limited) is available from 2000 to 4000 rpm. These impressive engine data are the key to exceptional performance and superbly assured driving dynamics. But the powerful AMG twelve-cylinder unit is also in its element when cruising effortlessly in high gear. Its superbly responsive character is as impressive as its smooth, low-vibration running qualities which guarantee the high level of touring comfort typically associated with Mercedes. The twelve-cylinder biturbo engine of the CL 65 AMG features the very latest technology from the world of motorsports. Highly resilient components and materials guarantee consistently high power and torque levels, even at extreme operating temperatures. A case in point is the charge-air cooling system which uses an air/water heat exchanger and a particularly large low-temperature radiator at the front of the vehicle. The maximum charge pressure is 1.3 bar.
The characteristic AMG twelve-cylinder sound is ensured by the AMG sports exhaust system with two twin chromed V12-design tailpipes. Catalytic converters with tri-metallic coating provide a faster response from a cold start, more efficient exhaust-gas aftertreatment and a longer service life. The CL 65 AMG complies with the EU 4 emissions standard as well as specific requirements of the US market.
AMG SPEEDSHIFT 5-Speed Auto with Steering-Wheel Shift Paddles
The drive power of the new CL 65 AMG is transmitted to the wheels by the AMG SPEEDSHIFT five-speed automatic transmission with AMG steering-wheel gearshift paddles and DIRECT SELECT gearshift. An 'S/C/M' mode button in the center console allows the driver to choose between the 'Sport', 'Comfort' and 'Manual' driving programs. As well as changing the transmission characteristics, these modify the accelerator response and the spring/damper settings of the AMG sports suspension based on Active Body Control. Gears can also be shifted manually at any time by means of the silver-colored aluminum shift paddles on the AMG ergonomic sports steering wheel.AMG Sport Suspension Based on Active Body Control
The AMG sports suspension based on Active Body Control reduces almost all of the body movements that occur when moving off, cornering and braking. The CL 65 AMG negotiates bends of every type with a greatly reduced roll angle while body roll during fast avoiding maneuvers is effectively suppressed. In this way, the AMG V12 coupe not only opens up new dimensions of dynamic handling, but also offers noticeably enhanced comfort.AMG High-Performance Brakes with Innovative Twin Sliding Calipers
The polished 20-inch AMG twin-spoke forged wheels painted in titanium grey also contribute to the superb roadholding of the CL 65 AMG. At the front, the 8.5-inch-wide wheels are fitted with 255/35 ZR 20 tires, while 275/35 ZR 20 tires equip the 9.5-inch-wide wheels at the rear. With their filigree spokes, they offer tantalizing views of a brake system, the like of which is not to be found in any other manufacturer's products. The system in question is the AMG high-performance brake system which sets new standards for stopping power, sensitivity and resistance to fading. In keeping with the innovative approach typical of AMG, the front brakes of the CL 65 AMG are equipped with twin sliding calipers. A world first, this new technology combines the advantages of a floating-caliper brake – lower heat transfer to the brake fluid and significantly enhanced comfort as a result of the way the brake pads are located – with the performance of a large fixed-caliper brake. At the rear, braking is handled by a large frame-type sliding caliper. Composite blind-drilled brake discs at the front and rear with respective diameters of 390 and 365 millimeters ensure the shortest stopping distances, excellent resistance to fading and outstanding sensitivity. Under emergency braking from 100 km/h at the permissible gross vehicle weight, the CL 65 AMG comes to a standstill in 35.6 meters; this represents a maximum deceleration of 11.1 m/s2. Based on the ADAPTIVE BRAKE system, the electronically controlled dual-circuit hydraulic brake system supports numerous driver assistance functions – such as the PRE SAFEâ Brake system, Brake Assist PLUS and DISTRONIC PLUS – for even greater safety and comfort.
AMG Body Styling: Powerful and Elegant Design
The advanced technology of the CL 65 AMG is complemented perfectly by the vehicle's powerful, elegant and dynamic design idiom. The AMG body styling and the self-assured lines of the large Mercedes coupe make a superbly cohesive formal statement. Large air intakes, side air outlets and round fog lamps with chrome surrounds dominate the front, as do the special AMG radiator grille with two horizontal chrome louvers and the darkened bi-xenon headlamps. Distinctive side skirts and 'V12 BITURBO' lettering enhance the sides while the two twin chromed V12-design tailpipes and the muscular rear apron with its black diffuser insert make the rear of the vehicle particularly eye-catching.Interior: Dynamic Style and the Finest Materials
Inside, too, the V12 top model impresses with its dynamic style and its use of the finest materials: the AMG sports seats have a special upholstery pattern as well as both multicontour and massage functionality; the EXCLUSIVE PASSION Nappa leather upholstery has a new diamond pattern. All four seats feature metal AMG badges. The AMG ergonomic sports steering wheel has a specially sculpted rim and silver-colored AMG aluminum gearshift paddles. Integrated in the AMG instrument cluster (which is calibrated up to 360 km/h and features 'V12 BITURBO' lettering), the AMG main menu shows the currently selected gear and recommends when to shift up to the next gear. It also allows the driver to choose between viewing the engine oil temperature or the battery voltage as well as the 'RACETIMER'. Using the latter, the driver can measure lap times – when driving on a private race circuit, for example. A particularly notable highlight of the interior is the IWC-design analogue clock. Fine poplar wood trim elements as well as AMG door sills and the AMG sports pedals in brushed stainless steel complete the picture.
