Alex, θα ήθελες να γράψεις εντυπώσεις στο Οδήγησα;

Buenos Aires -> Ushuaia.

And here we are. Saturday morning. Couldn’t sleep the previous night. Going through the National configuration of Dubai Autodrome in my mind. Watching every available onboard from Ferraris and other GT spec cars that I have found online. Finally the sun came up and we reached the track. Dragon racing garage in Dubai Autodrome had the doors open, in the entrance was parked as a display one Ferrari 333 SP in full working condition. Walking towards the pit lane and next to the 333 SP you could see a 458 Challenge and a 458 GT3 spec.
After a brief look at the displayed cars, I continued walking towards the back of the garage and near the pit lane door. The mechanics were preparing the cars to go out. McLaren’s and Ferrari’s. Wow…. And there she stood. The yellow beauty that I was about to drive was waiting for me. Mr. Price, Rob Barff and the rest of the team welcomed me with a smile.Well big Alex…. Said Rob. Are you ready?
Rob knew me from before. When I was still overweight and every time we were meeting at the track he was trying to put in my head that I needed to loose kilos. Well this time and since he hasn’t seen me for the past six months he was amazed. “Job well done mate. Now let us start. This car is oriented for gentleman drivers and since you are not a pro we would like to get your feedback.”After going through the basics and showing me the controls and everything inside out of the car we were ready to go and Jordan Grogor gave me the last pointers.
Well I have driven a 458 Italia before and although the 2 cars are having the same engine, chassis and transmission (but different gear ratios), driving a 458 race prepped car, it is a whole different world that had to explore.
The race car has gone a similar hard diet like me and with the use of thinner body panels, carbon fiber replacement panels, and polycarbonate windows and windshield she dropped to a curb weight of approx. 2900 lbs.
First laps were slow in order to get the car feeling and heat up the tyres properly as per Rob’s and Jordan’s instructions. The Challenge car of course being a racecar more focused for gentlemen drivers, and not pros, has driving aids such traction control or race ABS. For the TC it has only three positions. Position 1: Full traction control. Position 2: Less traction and position 3: Yes you thought correctly. Traction control is disabled. What is amazing though, is that the set up on this racecar when you are using new tires, traction control is not necessary but as the tires wear or the track conditions are slippery, I think the other two options will be helpful. The racing ABS system it doesn’t have any power assistant and the ceramics brake discs need a lot more pedal effort. Brakes are very consistent and the bite feeling that is passing on the driver is about my liking.
Anyway. As the test goes on approaching MY racing speed (not the cars) I couldn’t miss noticing the very stiff suspension and the tiny amount of body roll the car has. You drive it hard and still have more grip to give you even when exiting the corner which is what makes a good lap count especially on high speed turns or when you are exiting for the main straight.
The smile runs from one side of my face to the other. Amazing… Simply amazing. Lap after lap after lap. What a car…. And then between the sound of the 9000 RPM revving engine and the sweet music coming out of the race exhaust I watch the hand signal from the pitwall. PIT now. To tell you the truth I wanted to be out there lapping for eternity but like all the dreams it had to come to end.
Last lap was a cool down lap and as I exit from turn 15 I keep a tight line in order to drive into the pit road and wrap the whole driving session with a debriefing by my instructor and team mechanics.
What an amazing morning it was. Thanks to Leon Price for giving me this unique opportunity to drive one of his beauties, my instructors Rob Barff and Jordan Grogor, Jake Carlin who is the man arranging all the paperwork and organizes the pits and of course the unseen heroes who are the mechanics and they are making sure that the car was in top condition.
