Hockenheim is unlikely to be able to host the German Grand Prix in 2010 or beyond, the circuit's boss Karl-Josef Schmidt has been quoted as saying.
He told Sunday's Der Tagesspiegel newspaper that the loss-making event will cease to be organised unless the state Baden-Wuerttemberg government pledges financial support.
'Without grants from the state there will be no more Formula One in Hockenheim,' said Schmidt.
Earlier this year, a spokesman for the state's ministry of economic affairs said it is 'not the task' of the public to fund events at the Hockenheimring. It is understood the position has not changed.
The Nurburgring, which alternates the hosting of Germany's annual race date with Hockenheim, is scheduled to stage the 2009 event.
Nurburgring General Manager Walter Kafitz responded to the news about Hockenheim by saying the circuit is not in a position to host the Grand Prix every year.
'We cannot afford that,' he told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa, admitting that - like Hockenheim - the Nurburgring also loses a single-digit million dollar sum per Grand Prix.
Schmidt warned: 'Formula one will disappear not just from Hockenheim but from Germany as a whole. Then it will only be run in Arab countries.'

Νicolas Prost targets Ferrari F1 test
With his new title as European F3000 champion, Nicolas Prost has targeted a Formula One test for Ferrari.
Prost, the 27-year-old son of the former quadruple world champion and team owner Alain Prost, secured the crown at the Magione circuit in Italy.
He started his career late, at the age of 22, but has since collected experience in junior single seaters, at Le Mans, and in the A1 series driving for France.
Prost said: 'I hope this title can help me in the future and I would like to do a test with Ferrari.
'His father Alain, who had a tumultuous Ferrari tenure in 1990 and 1991, acknowledged that Nicolas' 'dream' is a Ferrari test 'and we'll see what we can do.'
'To get a seat at 27 certainly isn't easy,' he added.

Vettel says Ferrari deal would be a dream
Sebastian Vettel has admitted racing with Ferrari would be 'a dream'.
The German driver, who won September's Italian Grand Prix from pole, was among the standouts of the 2008 season.
After just 26 F1 starts, the 21-year-old is moving up from Toro Rosso to the main Red Bull Racing team in 2009.
Asked by the Spanish newspaper El Pais if he would rather become world champion or achieve a Ferrari contract, he answered: 'Be world champion.'
'But, being realistic, you can't do that unless you are in one of the best cars, and Ferrari has shown that it knows how to make them. Of course, it would be a dream to race one of them,' Vettel said.
Vettel is known for being among the friendliest competitors in the paddock.
But he laughed to El Pais: 'If you want to find a good friend in the paddock, bring your dog.'

Fernando Alonso has said he will consider leaving Formula One if the sport enforces standard engines from 2010.
The FIA proposal has been highly controversial, particularly among F1's car manufacturers, who have hinted the move might be reason enough to withdraw from the sport.
Former champion Alonso agrees with their logic.
**
'If they approve a single engine, that would be the last straw. It would be time to start thinking about retirement,**' the 27-year-old said at a team sponsor event in Spain.Alonso said standardising parts like engines would be another 'backwards step' for Formula One.
He said the last V10 engines with nearly 1000 horse power, before the sport reverted to the current V8s, were 'exciting for the drivers - auto racing at its limit.'
'We've gone from a glimpse of the future to cars without electronic aids and no grip (and) which are a visual image of the past.'
