FIAT AUTO WILL LAUNCH TWENTY NEW MODELS, TWO NEW ENGINES, SAFEGUARD ITS ITALIAN FACTORIES, AND INVEST ALMOST TEN BILLION EUROS IN R&D, SAID CEO SERGIO MARCHIONNE
Fiat Auto will launch twenty new models, two new engines, safeguard its Italian factories, and invest almost ten billion euros in R&D, said CEO Sergio Marchionne's in a new business plan revealed yesterday.
Marchionne presented his new business plan - which details future new model launches and the locations for teir production - to government officials and unions, at the offices of the Prime Minister, yesterday morning. Eagerly awaited within the Italian auto industry, it created a few surprises - including the announcement of a new 'city' car to be built in Poland - and there were sighs of relief from the unions as no Italian plants will be earmarked for closure. Marchionne is busy stepping down a path of reversing years of decline and underinvestment in Fiat, and the unions - for their part - were impressed. 'There is a totally different climate now,' commented the head of the metalwokers union' ULIM, Giovanni Contento, said. 'This is obviously a transition phase because there are still temporary layoffs but now we're talking about working factories at a hundred percent capacity in the future.'
Twenty new models - divided up between Fiat, Lancia, Alfa Romeo and LCV - will be launched in the period of the business plan (2005-2008), with twenty three facelifts also scheduled.TEN BILLION EURO R&D INVESTMENT
**
9.6 billion euros will be invested in Fiat Auto by the end of 2008, 3.6 billion euros of this in the area of research and development.**The overall investment plan - of almost ten billion euros - will kick off with 2,150 billion euros being spent this year, followed by 2,500 billion euros in 2006, with similar amounts of 2,450 billion euros being pumped in during 2007, and then 2008. The Research and Development chunk of these amount will see 830 million euros spent this year, 960 million euros in 2006, while 900, and 980 million euros will be sunk into Fiat Auto during 2007 and 2008 respectively. Out of these sums, 150 million euros will be spent in the next three years on new painting systems.
Marchionne's plan also revealed that the Fiat Group - as a whole - will invest 17,700 billion euros by the end of 2008, with 7,470 spent on Research and Development
ALL OF FIAT'S FACTORIES GUARANTEED A FUTURE ROLE
The giant Mirafiori plant in Turin - which has been under threat - was given a firm future as the new Grande Punto will be assembled there (in addition to Melfi) from January 2006, while a second as yet unidentified model (although it is likely to be the new Multipla MPV) will be built there from 2008. As well as Mirafiori retaining existing Multpla assembly, it will as continue to produce 'high end' vehicles - currently the Alfa 166 and Lancia Thesis.Melfi was confirmed for the Grande Punto long-term, while Cassino will continue to build the Croma and Stilo, with the latter's replacement next year also earmarked for this plant. Termini Imerese will build the Lancia's Ypsilon model from the autumn, while Sevel will assemble the next-generation Ducato panel van range. Tychy in Poland will be expanded, as it will continue with the Panda and Seicento models, which will be joined by the all-new 'city' car (codenamed 500) in 2007. Alfa Romeo's Pomigliano factory will build the new Alfa 159 and 159 Sportwagon, while 147 and GT production will also continue at the Naples factory.
Production capacity in Fiat's Italian factories will be reduced slightly by 2008. This year Fiat expect to build 1,430,000 vehicles at the six main plants, with this reducing slightly to 1,365,000 per year by 2008. This equates to a drop of 280 cars per day.NEW TECHNOLOGY ON THE HORIZON
A new petrol 1.4-litre 16v turbo engine is being developed by Fiat Powertrain Technologies (FPT) which will be built at Termoli from 2007. The same year will also see the arrival of a new 4-cylinder, 1.6-litre diesel unit, scheduled to be built at the Pratola Serra factory. FPT will also develop their own 6-speed transmission (codename M40) for use in light commercial vehicles - which will replace the existing PSA-sourced componentry.
**
Multiair technology (with electronic valve actuation to optimise fuel consumption) - currently under development - will arrive in production in 2007, while a new low environmental impact 'small' engine - either with 2 or 3 cylinders - is now under development, with an arrival date of 2010 being targeted.**
Fiat - as the European market leader in CNG (Natural Gas) propulsion - will widen its scope even further. A 1.2 FIRE engine on the Panda with a rating of 105g/km (35 pct less than at present) will be available next year, while the new 1.4-litre 16v turbo engine - currently being developed by FTP - will also have CNG capability. -
**
LANCIA'S FUTURE IS ASSURED AS IT LISTS PROMINENTLY IN THE NEWS THAT 20 NEW MODELS, AS WELL AS 23 FACELIFTS, WILL BE INTRODUCED BY FIAT AUTO DURING 2005-08**
**
Of interest to enthusiasts of the Fiat Auto brands is the news that 20 new models - of which 5 are additional to previous plans - as well as 23 facelifts, will be introduced during the period of 2005-08.**
While this list includes models already seen this year, including the Fiat Croma and Alfa 159, some surprises are in store: a Lancia SUV in 2006, and the confirmation of a new Lancia Delta as well as a 'specialty' vehicle for the 'luxury' brand in 2007, signify that the marque has a future assured it, while a new Fiat 'city' car in 2007 and a replacement for the executive Alfa 166 in 2008 - complete the unscheduled announcements.BUSY 2005 GETS THE NEW MODEL ROLL-OUT FIRMLY ON TRACK
A rapid-fire schedule over the next four years (2005-2008) will see 20 new models (and 23 facelifts) introduced by Fiat Auto. This year counts the Fiat Croma (already introduced) the Alfa 159 sedan, 159 Sportwagon, Brera, Brera Spider and Grande Punto (the latter two which will be revealed at next month's Frankfurt IAA) arriving on the market. They will be joined in the market by an Idea van, and the facelifted Doblò range - the Cargo (van) and Panoramica (SUV) versions.
**
THE NEW FIAT STILO, AND THE SHOCK NEWS OF A LANCIA SUV, ARE THE HIGHLIGHTS OF 2006**
Next year the C-segment replacement for the Fiat Stilo will arrive. To be designed and engineered in record time by Magna-Steyr, it will be built at the Cassino factory (the present home of the Stilo) under the guidance of the Austrian engineering firm. A second facelift for the idiosyncratic Multipla MPV will make up Fiat's new model programme for 2006.The first big surprise however comes from Lancia who - along with a facelift for the popular Ypsilon - will introduce an unscheduled 'SUV', although no details whatsover are offered. However these two are the first of three all-new models, and three facelifts, to be badged as Lancias in the period up to 2008, providing welcome news that the historic brand is assured a firm role in Sergio Marchionne's vision for the future of Fiat Auto.
Alfa Romeo will bring forward the arrival of the GT facelift by a year, to 2006, while Fiat's LCV arm will introduce the new Scudo and Ducato, a van option for the new Grande Punto, a Multipla van facelift, and finally a revised Strada pick-up.
**
NEW FIAT 'CITY CAR SCHEDULED FOR 2007The introductions will continue apace into 2007 with Fiat confirming that a new 'city' car (codenamed 500) will be built in Poland. The new 'World Car' replacement for the Palio (codenamed D200 and built by Tofas), details of which were revealed for the first time last month, will roll off the production lines - initially in Turkey - while a facelift for the Panda and Idea models are also scheduled.
Lancia will have very busy 2007 as their revival continues apace. The eagerly-awaited all-new Delta model (which will overlap C and D segments will arrive), together with a 'specialty' vehicle, a fresh facelift for the Phedra MPV, and finally a makeover for the Musa small-MPV.Alfa Romeo will introduce the new C-segment Alfa 147 replacement (the Alfa 149), while LCV will have another busy year, bringing out in record time the new Stilo van, the Minicargo (the new joint venture with PSA in Turkey) as well as facelifts for the Panda and Idea vans.**
A NEW MPV FROM FIAT ARRIVES IN 2008
Finally 2008 will see Fiat bring introducing an all new MPV to replace the long-running Multipla, while the 'Minicargo' Panoramica, as well as facelifts of the Croma and Grande Punto, complete the new Fiat models outlined in Marchionne's 2005-08 business plan.Alfa Romeo will round out the period with an new Alfa 166 executive saloon replacement, as well as the arrival of facelifts for the 159 sedan, 159 Sportwagon, Brera and Brera Spider. Finally the LCV division will quickly roll out a van version of the all-new Multipla MPV, while a facelift is earmarked for the Grande Punto van

2002 WOMAN OF THE YEAR: Fiat counts heavily on Cristina Siletto
By Luca Ciferri
Automotive News Europe / December 16, 2002Cristina Siletto
Age: 37
Nationality: Italian
Family: Single
Title: Heads 'Project 199,' Fiat's 2005 Punto replacement
Education: Engineer, graduated in 1990 from Turin Polytechnic
Previous job: Led project '188 FL,' next year's Punto facelift
First job at Fiat: Worked on self-diagnostic systems for engine management systemsFiat Auto's recovery plan calls for big profits to start flowing again in 2005 -- mainly because an all-new Punto will go on sale in May of that year.
Enter Cristina Siletto, the 37-year-old woman who has been put in charge of Project 199 -- and who is Automotive News Europe's 2002 Woman of the Year.
Heading Project 199 is a daunting task. But Siletto, who has risen higher than any woman in the history of the Italian auto industry, views her job in simple terms.
'I must respect the timing, the costs and the quality,' she says. 'And I must come out with a product that the consumer will perceive as a true leap forward - just as the Uno was compared with the 127, and the first Punto was in replacing the Uno.'
That's all easier said than done. And complicating things is the fact that the Punto replacement is also the first car developed by the common 'small vehicle architecture' team formed by Fiat on February 2002.
But Siletto inspires plenty of confidence. Fiat/Lancia boss Gianni Coda says: 'Thanks to her technical and project management skills and her personal qualities, above all her determination and effectiveness, we realized that she was the right person to manage such a strategic model for Fiat.'
Siletto says: 'I was very lucky to get this assignment.'
Thin, gentle, with magnetic green eyes, Siletto seems a quiet manager at first. But colleagues say she is very tough. She frequently flies into a rage to make a point with her team.
As head of the 199 Project, about 30 people report directly to her.
'To be the head of a project means to be an endless mediator, with a single objective,' Siletto says, 'to
protect the profitability and the desirability of your pet.'
Women engineers and executives have to be very good to rise in Italy. They work in a heavily male-dominated environment.
'At the Turin Polytechnic electronic engineering course I attended there was one girl for every 30 boys,' she says.
While working alternate weeks in Turin and Poland between September 1997 and March 1998, Siletto got a fresh perspective on the disadvantages women face in Italy. She was responsible for electrical and electronic applications on the Fiat Auto A-platform. Siletto had to ensure a smooth transition from single-point to the multi-point injection system on the Seicento.
'In Poland there were many more women in roles of high responsibility than in Italy,' she says. 'Many plant managers at local suppliers were female since Polish women normally have a much higher technical and scientific education than in western Europe.'
The weeks spent in Poland were a great learning experience for the young manager.
'Being far from the mother company you are alone and you have to make quick decisions,' she says. 'In addition, in Poland human relations are much more formal, so you cannot be as direct as we normally are here in Turin.'
Born in Turin on July 31, 1965, Siletto is a 'pure Turinese from three generations, something so rare these days that we have to be protected by the World Wildlife Fund as a species in risk of extinction.'
She grew up with electronics. Her father Giorgio worked in the engineering department and then in quality control at computer manufacturer Olivetti. Her mother Caterina taught data processing. Siletto and younger brother Carlo naturally ended up studying electronic engineering.
As a child, Siletto suffered from frequent coughs, so her parents had to find a way to keep her calm during inhalation therapy.
'I was very curious, so they gave me the color tables from encyclopedias to look at,' she says. 'I really fell in love with a road section drawing, where you saw all the different type of tubes and connections that lie under a road. I think this influenced the decision to work on automotive electrical systems.'
During the 1989 Christmas holiday, Siletto answered a Fiat Auto advertisement for new engineers. She had planned to take several months off after her scheduled graduation the following May. But Fiat insisted that she start work immediately. She began on June 4, 1990.
Her first assignments were to work on self-diagnostic systems for engine management systems and then design complete electrical and electronic systems. In February 1994, Siletto was asked to apply the systems on the A-platform, which meant working on the future Seicento and Multipla.
Her big break came in November 1998 when, at age 33, she was named head of life-cycle management for the Seicento. In January 2000, she was given responsibility for the '188 FL,' the Punto face-lift that will appear next summer.
Her bosses, Marco Vassallo, head of the 'Small' platform and Nevio di Giusto, head of product development, decided Siletto was capable of handling more. In July 2001 they made her project leader for Project 199.
'She's a very determined and tough person,' says di Giusto. 'She has a positive attitude that strengthens the team spirit.'
Siletto works long hours, from 10 to 12 hours a day, but doesn't conform to Fiat's tradition of early risers.
'I hate a brutal awakening,' she says.
She normally doesn't get to the office before 9 am, but doesn't leave before 8:30 or 9 pm.
'There is no one at home waiting for me, so I can arrange my working day as I like,' Siletto says. 'I do not have much time for a private life, but I feel it is important to forget the work as soon as I leave the office.'
On the weekend she's normally off skiing in winter and sailing in summer. She also likes to watch movies and cook.
'I'm really a movie enthusiast, a great fan of Woody Allen and - in general - of clever movies that make you think and not just relax. I also love French movies.'
She likes the 'technical side' of cooking and her skill is widely recognized among friends.
'When they discover I'm not leaving Turin for the weekend they ask to be invited for dinner,' she says.
At work she's all business, even in appearance. During office hours Siletto wears very small earrings and no necklace. On her wrist is a 1951 Zenith gold male watch she took from her father during her university years and has never returned.
At a difficult time inside Fiat, colleagues say Siletto has kept up the morale of her team and has the crucial Punto project well on track.
'It's a great challenge. I will be very, very busy for the next three years, but I'm extremely happy,' she says. 'I really love my job and the responsibility for the new Punto is probably one of the most exciting positions in the entire company.'
