WOW!!!
General Motors' 4th-Quarter Net Income Rises Fourfold
By Joe Miller BloombergDetroit, Jan. 16 (Bloomberg) -- General Motors Corp.'s quarterly profit rose fourfold to $1.02 billion, as the world's largest automaker won market share in the U.S by selling more Hummer H2 sport-utilities and Chevrolet Cavaliers.
Fourth-quarter net income was $1.71 a share, up from a year- earlier $255 million, or 60 cents, the Detroit-based company said. Revenue rose 5.9 percent to $48.7 billion, the most ever in a fourth quarter, from $46 billion.
The company gained U.S. market share from rival Ford Motor Co. last year, as Chief Executive Officer Rick Wagoner boosted sales of new models such as the $50,000 Hummer and extended no- interest loans on older cars such as the Cavalier compact.
``They are winning the incentive game,' said Brian Eisenbarth, a portfolio manager at Davidson Investment Advisors, which manages $800 million, including 165,000 General Motors shares.
Sales Needed
General Motors needs increased vehicle sales to finance rising pension and health-care obligations, and to assure investors that it will be able to pay down debt. Wagoner plans to introduce 16 models this year, twice the usual number.
Shares of General Motors fell 31 cents to $39.89 at 11:28 a.m. in New York Stock Exchange composite trading. The stock has risen 8 percent this year after dropping 24 percent in 2002.
Eisenbarth said he expects the shares to climb to at least $50 a share by the end of the year.
General Motors received a $600 million breakup fee after Echostar Communications Corp. abandoned its $27 billion takeover bid for the automaker's Hughes Electronics Corp. satellite- television unit. The fee boosted General Motors' earnings in the latest quarter by $372 million, or 20 cents a share. Expenses related to the Hughes unit reduced profit by $202 million, or 11 cents.
Breakup Fee
Without the breakup fee and Hughes expenses, profit was $850 million, or $1.62 a share. On that basis, the company exceeded the average analyst estimate of $1.52 a share, according to a Thomson First Call survey.
Profit from General Motors' North American business almost doubled to $633 million from $392 million, as the company produced 10 percent more vehicles in the region, cut production costs and sold more cars and trucks.
General Motors' loss in Europe, which includes Opel, Vauxhall and Saab, narrowed to $129 million from $240 million, as the company cut costs. The loss for Latin America, Africa and the Middle East narrowed to $7 million from $111 million. The Asia- Pacific region had profit of $66 million, up from $25 million.
General Motors said its worldwide market share last year slipped to 14.9 percent from 15 percent in 2001.
Profit at the company's General Motors Acceptance Corp. finance unit rose 20 percent to $524 million.
Forecast
The automaker said it expects to earn $1.45 a share in the first quarter and left its full-year profit forecast of $4.75 unchanged. The forecast includes its Hughes subsidiary. Excluding Hughes, General Motors expects profit of $1.50 a share for the quarter and $5 for the year.
For the year, net income rose to $1.7 billion, or $3.35 a share, from $601 million, or $1.77. Revenue rose 5 percent to $186.2 billion from $177.3 billion.
General Motors' share of U.S. sales, including Saab, rose to 28.7 percent last year from 28.3 percent. U.S. share for top rival Ford fell to 21.5 percent from 23.1 percent, while Toyota Motor Corp.'s increased to 10.4 percent from 10.1 percent.

I thought about posting this here, but then I thought, these guys will take me for a GM fan at this point, which I am not. Good to see someone else follow this kinda of VERY important stuff. This type of messages is THE CORE about the automotive industry. It is all about financial results weather some people like it or not. The only reason cars and trucks are what they are today, is because of financial results. Everything else, simply walks.

'The incentive game' ? Ωραίο ακούγεται αλλά $600M αύξηση πρέπει να έχουν μια καλύτερη εξήγηση!
