Διστυχως το τελευταιο round του πρωταθληματος δεν πηγε οπως το σχεδιαζαμε. 0,1 δευτερολεπτα με χωρισαν απο τα δυο πρωταθληματα που κυνηγουσα....
The final race of 2012/2013 NGK Racing Series left onlookers on the edge of their seats, with the Clio Cup only settled on the final sprint to the flag.
The hug said it all. Earlier in the afternoon, Clio Cup points leader and reigning Champion Alexandros Annivas had driven the wheels off the Renault (much to the chagrin of race control who begged the Grecian to take it easy across the kerbs) in a final, heart-stopping race of the 2012/2013 NGK Racing Season. But Ramzi Moutran – who tailed Annivas by just six points in the Clio Cup standings and one point in the Class 2 standings coming into the weekend – had just been too quick.
Annivas got off to a good start to the weekend, qualifying just ahead of the Brit in a session that (bizarrely) had been threatened by rain just fifteen minutes before kick off (much as round two had been). At the rolling start for race one, the Gulf Petrochem/Mouritsa Racing Clio maintained its advantage, though a move from Moutran on the second lap put the Duel Racing Clio in the hotseat, ahead of the Grecian.
Annivas wasn’t the only Gulf Petrochem in trouble. Joined in the spare car by his brother Konstantinos (making his event return after a debut run in round one) the second Clio was already suffering oil pump issues, hampering his pace significantly in qualifying and leaving a question mark over the entry, full stop.
An electric start from ninth to fifth for Konstantinos Annivas in race one suggested that all was well with the #51 Clio, as did consistent laptimes. But five laps later, and with his laptimes dropping away fast, Konstantinos coasted onto pitroad and into retirement. A similarly electric start in race two (in which he nearly got the legs on brother Alexandros) was again all to no avail, and the faltering oil pump brought his second race to a close after just two laps.
In the Class 1 leading Gulf Petrochem SEAT Leon, Costas Papantonis was having similar issues. A repeat of the ill-luck that struck him down so cruelly at last season’s series finale (though at least this season he had already secured the NGK Racing Series Class 1 title) saw the Leon refuse to budge off the startline for the warm-up lap. Having made his way back to the pole spot for the rolling start, Papantonis would immediately be swamped by the entire field after a very slow getaway. The Champ would make it only as far as lap two before coolant issues brought his weekend to an early finish.
Amazingly, this left NGK 300 runner Spencer Vanderpal as the sole remaining Class 1 runner, albeit down in ninth place in the ex-Matt Neal British Touring Car Championship Honda Civic Type R. Pre-event, the effectiveness of the Civic’s engine had been a mystery, albeit immaterial with a gearbox and engine change both on the horizon in the near future. Indeed, after a steady first race, a fried clutch meant the Civic would not make the second start.
That left SVDP Racing honours in the hands of debutant (and team mechanic) Sam North in the team’s Dubai 24 Hours D1 Category-winning BMW 120D. The Brit’s laptimes would slowly fall as the race went by, though inexperience and an underpowered BMW powerplant still left the Brit nearly five seconds adrift of his nearest rivals. A podium was never on the cards, but North still impressed with two sensible races to bring the BMW home without incident on his first ever race weekend. As North admitted post-event, the big has bitten, and he expects to be back next season.
With Alexandros Annivas and Ramzi Moutran though, the battle was on to the finish. Identical pace meant, try as he could, Annivas couldn’t find a way past and could only watch as Moutran took race one victory and the standings lead. Race two however would be the nail-biter. A blinding start from Jonathan Mullan in the Honda Integra – who despite fuel rail, alternator, manifold and suspension failures throughout the season was ready to go for broke in the season finale – saw him waltz past race one winner Rupesh Channake on the run down to turn one. The Irishman would retain the lead for two laps before the Lap57 Racing Honda Integra slipstreamed its way into the lead. That would ultimately make it two for two from Channake after a solid weekend.
Now battling to keep second position, Mullan had Moutran’s Duel Racing Clio clambering all over him through the corners, the grunt of the Honda engine just keeping the Integra in front on the straights. Annivas, having lost time after a tap from newboy Mario Diaz saw pushed him wide in the opening few circuits, was pushing to close the gap. Running half a tenth faster than the battling duo up front, he began to close them down.
Further back, the second Moutran brother, Sami, was battling with the remaining Clio of Will Morrison (who was looking to make up for a disappointing race one that ended on pitroad and without power), the returning Thomas Sorenson (who’d already taken a strong sixth place in race one in the Renault Clio), and the Lap57 Dubai 24Hrs A2-Category winning Honda Integra, this time with Diaz at the wheel. The Indian was already in hot water with race officials after a jumpstart, yet – inexplicably – decided against serving his drive-through penalty. Though keen to aid brother Ramzi’s title offense, Sami (incensed with Diaz’s refusal to serve his penalty) would go no further than lap 12 in the #56 Clio, a sticking throttle putting paid to a superb effort. Third in class (fifth overall) in race one was still a solid result, while third in the Clio class in race two was a similarly apt reward for Morrison’s efforts.
By lap ten, Mullan was starting to struggle. Fears that the Honda would begin understeering as the race entered its closing stages were starting to prove valid, and several times a wide exit from turn 16 left Ramzi Moutran agonisingly close to snatching second place away. By lap 11, the gap from Mullan to Moutran was just 0.25s, and the gap further back to Annivas was just over 2.2s. We’ve seen many times at the Dubai Autodrome this season that races are won or lost on the final lap, and as the trio took the white flag for the final lap of the season, nobody dared predict who would take the final corner in the lead. All three touring cars disappeared from view down the main straight, leaving only the ever-more exited words of Phil Anson on commentary to keep us updated.
Rolling through the fast sweeping turn 15 for the final time, a cigarette paper could not separate the trio. But a wide moment for Mullan through turn 16 gave both Moutran and Annivas their opportunity, and both pounced. Neck-to-neck-to-neck went the sprint to the finishing line, Annivas trying one final late lunge around the outside of the corner and poor Mullan pressing his accelerator through the floor to finish off what had been an outstanding effort thus far. But both would be pipped by Moutran, a superb exit from the final turn powering him into second place overall, first place in the Clio Cup category, and to the top of the standings. On the last corner of the final race of the season, Ramzi Moutran had secured the 2012/2013 Clio Cup title in the most dramatic finish the series had produced all year.
Back in the paddock, the Moutran family was quick to swamp Ramzi’s Clio, the man punching the air victoriously shortly after. A few minutes later, Alexandros Annivas entered the fray to give the new Champion a big hug, which was returned with equal affection. It had been a tightly fought contest all season-long, with the outcome still unsure with less than 50 yards of the final race to run.
It may have lacked entry numbers, but the 2012/2013 NGK Racing Series had produced the goods when it really needed to. And so too had its new Champion.

Still emotions are mixed up. I wouldn’t change a thing on how the season passed and reached to the final race that both titles were up for grabs. I would like to congratulate my dad for winning Class 1 and Rupesh Chanaka for winning the Class 2 title(I told you last round that everything is possible). Also I would like to congratulate Ramzi Moutran for winning the Clio Cup title for 0.1 sec over the finish line. This is how Cup races should be. Everything open up for grabs till the last race, last lap, last corner. Congrats one more time mate.
I would like to thank my sponsors (Gulf Petrochem) that helped me during the season, not only financial wise but they were there in each and every race to physical support me and boost me up.
My race engineers Keith Wake and Brian Mcginley from Phoenix Motorsport, for their technical support and handing me a very well prepared car through the whole season.
My friends and colleagues that were coming to support me during the races.
Last but not least I would like to thank my unique and wonderful family not only for tolerating me for one more year, but also for the tuition in order to mentally and physically improve my skills during this attempt.
Hudge THANK YOU in everyone involved in this GREAT season. The bitter part for me on the last race, it is NOT that I didn’t win in order to be Champion for the 2nd consecutive time (we cannot win all the time and this is the magic of motorsport) but that I wasn’t given the chance to put more pressure and fight.
Unfortunately due to another competitor, from another class that was racing for the first time this season, (who jumped the red light at the pit lane exit, hit me 3 times in the first 2 laps, he disobeyed a drive through penalty, hit another Clio cup driver and forced him to retire from the race) dropped me back about 3,2 seconds. I tried very hard to recover and still managed to finish 0,1 sec behind the leader and new Champion. What would have happened? I don’t know… But this question was troubling me for the past few hours.
But putting this back now, I can say one thing. There is always next season. I can’t wait for the new season to start. With more cars on the grid, more competitors, same spirit between all of us regulars on the grid, great battles and above all great sportsmanship. -

Aragon FR3.5: Da Costa sent to the back of grid
Antonio Felix da Costa has been put to the back of the grid for the first Formula Renault 3.5 race at Aragon after his car ran out of fuel in qualifying.
The Red Bull junior stopped on track following the chequered flag, and was unable to get his car back to the pits after setting the third fastest time in the session.
Just like in Formula 1, FR3.5 rules require teams to be able to produce a fuel sample from a car after qualifying. Failure to do so results in that car's times being deleted.
Immediately after the session, da Costa had told AUTOSPORT he was unsure of the reason for his car stopping, saying he 'just saw some alarms on the dash'.

Mark Webber says he shares a 'great camaraderie' with Sebastian Vettel despite what happened in the Malaysian Grand Prix.
The relationship between the two took a serious knock at the Sepang circuit when Vettel deliberately disobeyed team orders to take the victory from Webber.
It was not the first incident in the duo's relationship and most likely will not be the last as Vettel made it clear that if the situation ever arose he would do it again.
But despite that, Webber says he has a good relationship with his triple World Champion team-mate.
'Now into its seventh season, my partnership with Red Bull Racing is one of the longest between a driver and a team,' the 36-year-old told IANS.
'Sebastian and I are a team and we share a great camaraderie.'
Asked for his reaction to some of the comments Vettel made in the wake of the Malaysian GP, Webber said: 'Look, Sebastian is an experienced driver. Besides, we have a common goal as team-mates to make our team proud.
'We continue to respect each other and will continue to remain focused in wanting to make the team proud.'
The Aussie also revealed that he has not given up on beating Vettel to this year's title.
'The goal is always to win. That's what keeps me motivated on the tracks. I will give it my best shot and leave the rest to fate and destiny.'
