from vortex forums:
Q - When is the Golf V/Jetta V going to be introduced?
A - The Golf V will be introduced at the Frankfurt Auto Show, September 2003 and will initially be shown in 4-door and 2-door Golf and 2-door GTI form. The Golf/GTI V models go on sale in Europe as 2004 models towards the end of 2003.
Q - Will the Jetta V be introduced at the same time?
A - No. It will be introduced 6-8 months later.
Q - When will the Golf V and Jetta V be introduced in North America?
A - Best guess is at the Detroit Auto Show in January 2005. We will initially see the GTI and Jetta models for sale here in North America.
Q - So are we not getting the Golf 4-door here in North America?
A - Maybe not (at least initially). The Golf V 4-door will be much more upright and utilitarian (like the Peugeot 307 or Honda Civic) as that is the trend of hatch models in that segment in Europe.
[added 10.10.02] The 2-door GTI model will be more sleek and distinct in styling and closer to what we consider a Golf to look like today. In fact the GTI will be quite aggressive from the start with additional bodywork throughout to truely differentiate it from a regular Golf. Large frontal areas with big opens similar to the R32 front bumper have been thrown around as possibilities.
Q - So what is VW going to give us instead?
A - Rumors suggest VW is working on a 4-door Golf V-based SUV/Crossover for this market. VWoA has reportedly asked Pischetsrieder for such a vehicle to compete with the Honda CRV and Ford Escape and Toyota Matrix. This vehicle is reportedly being fast-tracked for this market. Don't expect to see it before 2005 though.
Q - So why no Golf V 4-door model here?
A - Several different reasons. The next Jetta will have a Golf front end on it essentially making it a 4-door Golf with a trunk. Also, traditional 4-door hatch models do not sell well in North America and with the Golf V 4-door getting taller and more utilitarian it will be less suitable for this market. VW feels that a Golf V-based SUV/Crossover and the Jetta V sedan will cover that market segment better here. The GTI will still be sold here though in 2-door form, so hatch purists will still get a traditional hatch model. The 4-door Golf could still come here in the future, but not initially.
Q - So the Jetta V will have a Golf front end? I'm not sure I like that...
A - The next Golf will have headlamps that are pulled back more and slightly taller with project beam units integrated in. It will be sleeker looking and not quite as round as the current front design of the Golf IV. Because of this it made more financial sense to give the Jetta the same front end treatment. We don't know if this means that the Bora model (what the Jetta is called in Europe) and be sold as a Golf Sedan.
Q - So what does the Golf V/Jetta V look like?
A - None of the photos you've seen so far are accurate. There are some elements that have been captured in these renderings, but no official photos have been released so far. The new Golf 4-door is much more upright, with a taller green house. The 2-door and GTI models are sleeker with their own distinct sheetmetal. Headlamps are project beam units that are more pulled back and slightly taller. The look is best described as a cross between the current Golf IV and a Peugeot 307 with some Phaeton ques thrown in. The wheel base is over 1.5 inches longer with the wheels pushed out more towards the front corners of the car. Overall length is up about an inch and width is up over an inch as well.
The next Jetta is reportedly quite a looker. It has been compared to the Alfa 156 and Peugeot 307 in looks. Dimensions are roughly identical to the current 3-series BMW in size. Rear seat room is better than outgoing models.
Q - So will the new car be heavier?
A - VW is doing a number of things to keep weight in check, but yes it will be slightly heavier than outgoing models.
Q - What about suspensions?
A - All Golf V/Jetta V models will have a completely revised MacPherson front suspension and a fully independent 4-link rear suspension. Steering will be an all-new electro-mechanical steering unit. Volkswagen hired away the suspension guru that did the Ford Focus and those that have driven the Golf V say it handles tremendously better than the Golf IV. Sounds like VW might have finally gotten this right.
Q - What will the transmission offerings be?
A - All cars will have a six-speed manual transmission standard with a 5-speed tiptronic as an option. In the future there will be a new dual-clutch sequential automatic that VWAG has applied for numerous patents on. It is reportedly better than BMW's SMG system and similar to the Ferrari F1 paddle system, but smoother in operation. This new transmission offering might not be available right at launch.
Q - What about engines?
A - There will be three engine offerings for the U.S. market:
-
An all-new 2.0l 16v 4-cylinder turbo with 180hp. This engine is based on the current 2.0l but completely new. It will reportedly be ULEV or better certified. This is the only engine currently signed off on and is currently slated to be the base engine in all Golf V/Jetta V models.
-
240hp 24v 3.2l VR6 - Rumors suggest this is a very expensive engine to produce and since it would have to have 4motion as standard equipment, would command a premium price. Since the 3.2l VR6 will be used in the Touareg and next generation Passat, volume increases from those two models could help defray costs, but right now it is expensive, maybe too much so. For now it is still supposed to be offered in North American Golf V/Jetta V models with 4motion as standard equipment.
-
1.9l 100hp PD TDI - Volkswagen is committed to getting TDI engines back into all of their model lineup. The 1.9l 100hp PD TDI will get VWoA through till 2006 when new diesel fuel regulations bring cleaner burning fuel here. After 2006 (and considering the proposed diesel fuel reg changes happen) VWoA could bring over any TDI engine offered in Europe and opens the door for some really great potential TDI offerings here in the future.
-
The wierd potential - VW is working on a new V-10 gasoline engine that will spawn a new inline-5 engine as well. Additionally, there is talk of a turbocharged inline-5 being worked on for the future. Could either of these engines make it here? Maybe... if the 3.2l VR6 proves to be too expensive we could see an inline-5 turbo with 4motion instead. However, we could see a normally aspirated inline-5 (without turbo) as a base engine. Who knows - we'll be watching this one carefully.
Q - So there will be Golf IV/Jetta IV models through model year 2004 then?
A - Yes. The current Golf IV and Jetta IV will be sold at least through model year 2004 and potentially part of 2005.
Q - Ok, so what's the new Golf V/Jetta V going to cost?
A - Volkswagen is shooting to price the new cars at nearly the same price as the outgoing models. Some of the technical features on the new Golf V are more expensive, as is the all new structure, lighter weight materials, and more. Still VW wants to try and hold the line on pricing.
Q - So if it is more expensive, what is VW going to do about a cheaper base model?
A - Volkswagen will very likely be bringing the Polo Sedan and potentially the Polo hatch here to North America as new entry level models. The all-new Polo has nearly as much room as a current Golf inside and is not that small of a car any longer. If VW can build the Polo in Brazil to bring the costs down, we could see it here at around $13,000-$14,000 price range.
