Leone Debut

The Subaru Leone coupe 1400 and the new Subaru R-2 series were launched at the prestigious Keio Plaza Hotel in Tokyo’s Shinjuku ward on October 7th 1971. Several hundred journalists were crammed into the exhibition space where they got to see the famous singer perform the original commercial song for the vehicle. Two days later on October 9th, the pre-festival for the fourth annual Shinjuku music festival sponsored by Fuji Heavy Industries was held in Shinjuku Nishi park. At this festival, twenty emerging Japanese traditional and young popular singers participated in a parade through the streets of Shinjuku while riding on the newly-launched Leone.

In response to the diversification, individualization, and all-round higher quality of the popular car market, the Leone was designed with an advanced wedge-shaped exterior for aerodynamic performance and was given a sporty image with a luxurious interior. Its power was provided by the EA63 4-cylinder horizontally opposed engine. In addition to the single-carbureted standard models (GL and DL), the lineup was completed with the addition of the GSR and GS grade that were equipped with the sporty twin carburetor EA63S engine. This engine had a maximum output of 93 PS at 6,800 rpm and a maximum torque of 11.0 kg•m at 4,800 rpm.

The suspension consisted of MacPherson strut suspension in the front, and semi-trailing arm suspension in the rear to give the vehicle independent suspension on all four wheels and it was equipped with disc brakes in the front (the DL had duo-servo brakes) to make it a conventional outboard type. After the seeing the achievements of the dual radiator engine cooling system, radiators with electric cooling fans were also included for efficient cooling. The addition of electric fans to cross-flow radiators with bypass systems allowed a cooling system that automatically adjusted to the most efficient state according to driving conditions. The sashless door design that has become a common feature in Subaru vehicles also originated in the first generation Leone.

The first generation Leone (1972 to 1979)

In 1972, one year after the Leone coupe was launched, the Leone 4-door sedan models (DL, GL and CUSTOM) (on February 19th), the 2-door sedan models (GL, DL and STD), the 1100 series models, the 2-door STD and DL/4-door DL models, and the Estate van 1400/1100 models (on April 22nd) were added to the lineup. In autumn that year a rear differential, transfer and propeller shaft were added to the longitudinally orientated transmission and the Leone 4WD Estate van model with part-time 4WD was launched on September 1st. By the end of the year (December 1st) the Leone coupe 1400 RX with a twin carburetor engine, 5-speed transmission, and 4-wheel disc brakes was also released.

In 1973, the Leone hardtop 1400 with rounded 4-light headlamps and a padded bumper was released on June 9th and underwent the first minor change when the new Leone series was launched as 24 variations (October 13th) by adding the 1200 cc series.

Entering into 1974, on July 27th the Leone passed the 1975 United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) official vehicle emissions test without a catalytic converter. On January 13th 1975, the Subaru Exhaust Emission Control - Thermal and Thermodynamic Control (SEEC-T) system which complied with the 1975 Japanese exhaust emission regulations was announced. Following this, on January 20th, the new Leone series that added a 4WD sedan with a forward 3-speed six-position automatic transmission to the lineup was announced. When EPA and the Federal Energy Administration released the 1976 new car fuel efficiency rankings on September 22nd, the Leone with SEEC-T was awarded first place.
After this, the 1976 exhaust emission regulation-compliant Leone SEEC-T series was launched for Japanese domestic sales on October 1st, followed by the Leone SEEC-T 1600 4WD sedan, the automatic series (January 19th), and 1500 of the limited edition Leone special (November 1st) models were put onto the market.

Δεν το νομιζω..ενα ιδιο ασπρο σταματαγε εξω απο το σχολειο μου στο Χολαργο(αλλα εχει εξαφανιστει απο το 2007 περιπου ).Και γενικα ειχα δει και καμποσα αλλα,εκτος αν ηταν μεταχειρισμενα εξωτερικου.

On April 1st 1977, Subaru announced the New Leone series which was the first to comply with the extremely strict 1978 Japanese exhaust emission regulations. That summer, the Leone 4WD gave a splendid performance in the 1977 London to Sydney (30,000 km) rally to finish in 19th place overall and 4th place in the 4WD class.

The Subaru Brat was developed especially for the North American, Australian, and European markets and put on sale in October. The Brat was a unique multi-purpose pickup truck based on the Leone 4WD which had seats installed in the cargo bed, making it a four-seater passenger vehicle. The Brat underwent a model change in conjunction with the Leone model change, and its production was continued until 1987. After this, on November 1st the Leone 1600 Grand AM series which had a large impact absorbing bumper for the American market was put on sale in Japan. In 1978 the Leone RX-A and the Grand AM 4-door sedan were launched (March 1st), followed by the New Leone series (1600 Super Custom sedan, 1400 DL sedan, 1600 Super Touring sedan, 1600 RX/A coupé, 1600 Grand Am/T hard top, 1600 4WD LG Estate van) on July 7th.
