Ford Iosis X
Ford Iosis X
Last year's concept from Ford was the iosis, previewing the design of the new Mondeo, and now comes the crossover version: iosis X. It continues Ford's theme of 'kinetic design', and also previews an upcoming production model.'There's been a lot of speculation about Ford producing a compact crossover or sport-utility vehicle', said Ford Europe's CEO John Fleming. 'The iosis X is intended to send a very strong message that we will be entering this market in around eighteen months from now, and that our new model will be both stylish and individual.'
The production version won't look exactly like this concept - which is somewhat reminiscent of the Japanese-market Isuzu VehiCross - but, according to design director Martin Smith, 'customers will be able to get a feel for the design direction our production model will take, and when we do reveal that model next year, the relationship between it and the iosis X will be immediately apparent.'
The iosis X has, like most of the upcoming new breed of sporty semi-SUVs, been conceived as a kind of high-riding four-door sports car with chunky body styling. It is not a large vehicle, though, with the length of a compact C-sector car - suggesting that it shares some of its underpinnings with the Focus and related models, rather than the larger Mondeo.
Designed with specific reference to the increasingly stringent pedestrian safety regulations, the iosis X's front end has blunted-off corners, wraparound headlamps, and a small grille, disguising the extra volume needed to shield pedestrians from the sharp, hard engine beneath the bonnet. Down the side, the air vents behind the wheel arches are carried on from the original iosis, and there are clamshell-style doors, similar to those of the Mazda RX-8 with a smaller rear door and no central B-pillar. These may not see production, but for now, give easy access to the cabin and a good view of the interior. To the rear, the overhang is relatively long, to stop the car from looking too truncated.
Decorative elements include skid plates and side cladding on the lower section of the body; these fold down at the side to form steps, and their form was inspired by the aerodynamic foils on the side of Formula One cars. The wheels have different metal finishes, giving them a 3D effect, and reflect the trapezoidal shapes repeated elsewhere in the design: the front air intakes, the creases and lines around the windscreen and rear window, the kink of the C-pillar, the ridges down the bonnet and the inverted grille all echo this effect.
The latest LED lamps are fitted front and rear, with spotlights incorporated into the high-mounted door mirrors and a rear fog lamp above the rear skid plate which runs the full width of the back end. White paint was chosen to finish the car off, as white has long been used on Ford's motorsport cars, with a blue 'flip' tint to prevent from looking too heavy and to change tone with the light; two silver striped run down the bonnet, a pattern also etched into the glass roof panels.
The interior takes themes from the iosis a stage further, with a full-length central console running front to rear and all the way up into the roof - this is said to have been inspired by helicopter cockpit design. The top end of this console, at the rear, is also where the rear tailgate is attached, and it provides accommodation for the spare wheel. A further panel runs down the roof between the glass sections, housing lights, an entertainment screen and passenger grab handles, and a lighter, 'floating' centre console area frees up space in the front, and allows for a choice of different storage facilities. Air vents are disguised with a fine mesh.
The instrument panel has a wraparound effect again, with touch-screen controls, orange-illuminated dials, and a steering wheel with orange Perspex and 'piano' white sections. The sequential-shift transmission lever has a joystick-type feel. The orange theme is continued with the ambient LED lighting - though much of the light entering the cabin will be via the glass roof panels or, most notably, up through the glass floor, which allows occupants to check out the terrain as they go off-road&
The supportive seats are mounted on runners each side of the glass panels, and feature integrated seat belts. The trim designers were influenced by extreme sports-wear, and especially ski equipment, and the upholstery combines nubuck and aniline leather with high-tech neoprenes and other synthetic materials; the blue was chosen as a base colour, with fluorescent and orange highlights, to contrast with the white fixtures and to create a fresh, modern look, inspired by the white of the exterior and the different tones within snow and ice. The designers reckon that they have 'developed design elements that echo the free spirit of skiing.'
