Last year a shock win in a still-troubled Ferrari in the Sepang rain was key to keeping Alonso in the hunt early on.

Those 25 points mitigated the damage from Ferrari's very uncompetitive form in the next two races in China and Bahrain.

But Alonso believes this year he has the potential to take podiums at Shanghai and Sakhir, so can be optimistic of arriving at his home race at Barcelona with more than the 43 points he had at that stage in 2012.

Lewis Hamilton believes **his Mercedes team is now Red Bull's closest challenger.

The former world champion thinks the pace shown by his team in the opening two races - allied to his first podium with the outfit in the Malaysian Grand Prix – proves Mercedes is now a serious frontrunner.

'We are the second best team,' said Hamilton, when asked by AUTOSPORT about how encouraged he was by the Malaysia performance.

'To be that close - I was competing with the Red Bulls at some stages in the race – and to be in that position is a great feeling.'

Hamilton and team-mate Nico Rosberg shadowed rivals Red Bull for much of the Malaysian GP, before they were ordered to go into fuel-save mode towards the end of the race.

Hamilton believes that the outcome of the race would have been different had the team got its fuel strategy right.

'Unfortunately, we didn't have enough fuel in the car, more so my side,' he explained.

'I was fuel-saving from lap 25 and it was very much an impossible task to challenge those up ahead.

'I was fuel saving at the end like you would not believe: I was coasting everywhere.

'I'm sure if we were all on the same fuel it would have been a different situation, so I'm confident about that.'

Hamilton thinks the form shown by Mercedes is proof that the team is now in a position to win races.

'Definitely,' he said. 'I think this [Malaysia] proves that if we keep going in the direction we are heading, then there's a possibility that we could win a race at some stage this year.'

Δεν ηταν και πολυ δυσκολο. Σαν να μας λες δηλαδη οτι πρεπει να απαγορεψουμε τη λεξη win και οποιος δηλαδη πιστευει οτι θα παρει τη νικη να λεει σκετο οτι παει για ποντιουμ ή για βαθμους.

To ξερω οτι δεν σου αρεσει να ακους οτι ο αλονσο παει το πολυ για ποντιουμ αλλα δυστυχως για σενα προκειται για δηλωσεις του ιδιου.

Ξεχασε ομως να μας πει οτι θα ηταν βαρυτερος αρα και λογικα αργοτερος σε αυτους τους πρωτους 25 γυρους.

Φίλε μου, κατά 50% έχει ολοκληρωθεί η εικόνα για το συγκεκριμένο θέμα (ξέρουμε ότι η Merc μπορεί να φτιάχνει γρήγορα μονοθέσια) το άλλο 50% είναι η εξέλιξη του μονοθέσιου, όμως δεν υπάρχει η απαίτηση να είμαστε στο τέλος μπροστά από την Macca για να θεωρηθεί επιτυχημένη η κίνηση του Lewis, προς το παρόν τουλάχιστον. Μην ξεχνάμε που βρίσκονταν στο τέλος του 2012 η W03 και που είναι η W04 μέσα σε 4-5 μήνες.

Επειδή σε μένα αναφέρεστε, βάζω ότι στοίχημα θέλετε ότι η McLaren και φέτος και του χρόνου θα τερματίσει πάνω από την Mercedes. Κρατήστε το quοte για να με κάνετε ρόμπα αργότερα.

Ρε παιδια αν ειναι δυνατον. Δεν μπορουμε να κρινουμε απο 2 αγωνες, χωρις να δουμε το ποσο θα εξελιχθει η μια ομαδα και ποσο η αλλη. Και παλι, ουτε απο μια χρονια δεν μπορεις να κρινεις (τη φετινη συγκεκριμενα). Μακροπροθεσμα θα φανει αυτο.. Δηλαδη, αν του χρονου η McLaren ειναι πανω απο τη Mercedes (και οχι μονο) τι θα λεμε ;

Πιστευω οτι ειδικά η φετινη χρονια ως τελευταια πριν απο μεγαλες αλλαγες θα ειναι πολυ περιεργη, οπως και του χρονου.

Γιατι - λογικά - οποιος απο ενα σημειο και μετα - δεν θα διεκδικεί κατι 'θα παρατησει' την εξελιξη του φετινου και θα ριξει περισσότερο βαρος ( = πορους ) στο 'του χρονου' και ενδεχομενως αυτοι - του χρονου να ειναι πιο δυνατοι απο το αναμμενομενο...

Δεν θέλω να τρολάρω αλλά.η Φερράρι πήγε να κάνει το ίδιο μετά την επιτυχία της BrawnGP και απέτυχε. Πήγε να το ξανακάνει και ξανααπέτυχε. Σε καμία περίπτωση δεν είναι σίγουρη συνταγή αυτό.
