Mohammed Al Owais and Costas Papantonis celebrate on the podium after they took a win each in the Total UAE Touring Car races at Yas Marina Circuit
16 December 2012
Round 7 and Round 8 of the Total UAE Touring Car Championship took place at Yas Marina Circuit and Class 1 produced some of the best racing of the day on the island.
There was nothing to separate the trio of SEATs of Mohammed Al Owais (Emirates Racing Team), Costas Papantonis (Gulf Petrochem SEAT) and privateer Nader Zuhour. The trio swapped places throughout the two races, with Papantonis taking an impressive win in the first race and Al Owais taking second after Zuhour made an error which cost him victory.
Credit to Zuhour, showing modesty that is rare among race drivers, he was the first to admit the mistake, “I got the car on the rumble strip, it was damp and very slippery and next thing I was facing the wrong way. I lost five seconds on the leaders and that was that.” He crossed the line third.
Al Owais struck back to win the second race with Zuhour fending off Papantonis, the latter pair finishing second and third respectively.
Al Owais summed up his day, “Really it was a tale of two totally different races. I don’t know if it was the car or maybe me, but in race one the car was all over the place and then in race two it was perfect. But I must say the first race Costas [Papantonis] was really very strong, he drove very well and deserved to win. In the second race I got a good start and the rest is history.”Alexandros Annivas (Gulf Petrochem Renault) was unbeatable in the Clio Cup – race within a race – with two wins on the day over Nabil Moutran (Duel Racing).

Yas Marina Circuit plays host, on Friday 27 January, to the DAMC organized Round 5 of both the Total UAE Touring Car Championship and the NGK UAE GT Championship. It’s back to business for the UAE’s best race drivers in the first UAE national race meeting of the new year.
The biggest field of the 2011/2012 season is expected to line up on the grid. In Class 1 Nader Zuhour leads the championship standings in his SEAT Leon Supercopa and will be striving to keep the momentum going and sustain his lead at the top of the table.
He will have to work hard for his money on Friday because he has a number of SEAT drivers quite capable of snatching victory. Mohammed Al Owais in the Emirates Racing Team entered car is always a force to reckon with and, with two wins under his belt, the Emirati driver will be looking to add to his tally.
Also with a couple of wins in the bag this season is Ramzi Moutran, driving for Memac Ogilvy Duel Racing, who missed a couple of rounds due to personal commitments and thus will be itching to re-ignite his campaign. Third in the standings and always capable of upsetting the form book is former UAE Touring Car champion Costas Papantonis in the Gulf Petrochem backed SEAT. Also joining the Class 1 battle field as from this round is Abdulla Al Darmaki, also in a SEAT.In the tightly fought Clio Cup class, Alexandros Annivas (Gulf Petrochem Renault) is on winning streak – which started in Round 6 – with three wins in a row for the Fujairah based driver, who will be targeting two more top of the podium finishes on Friday.
With closest rival Khalid Bin Hadher opting out of this round, Annivas faces a tough challenge from the Moutran brothers Nabil and Sami in the pair of Memac Ogilvy Duel Racing Renault Clios – making it three brothers on the same grid for both races on the island – with Willie Morrison also in contention. -

Yas Marina Circuit, on Friday 27 January, hosted the DAMC organized Round 5 of both the Total UAE Touring Car Championship and the NGK UAE GT Championship, with some thrilling racing on the Northern Circuit configuration of the splendid Grand Prix venue.
In Race 1 of the Total UAE Touring Car Championship it was the usual suspects tussling at the front for top honours in Class 1, with Costas Papantonis finding good pace to score the first win of the day in the Gulf Petrochem backed SEAT Leon Supercopa. He managed to edge ahead of his closest rivals Ramzi Moutran (Memac Ogilvy Duel Racing SEAT) and Nader Zuhour in another SEAT.
Zuhour and Moutran battled it out nose to tail until the penultimate lap when, championship points leader, Zuhour spun while chasing Moutran. The latter claiming second place and Zuhour recovering to finish third.
Papantonis said afterwards, “It was an excellent race. I managed to get a good start and with the car going really well and I was able to take the win. I am very happy.”
In the second race Zuhour bounced back in fine style to take the win from Papantonis, with Moutran third. Zuhour said, “It is good to win especially after the first race. For me the second race was pretty good, although I did make a couple of mistakes early on. But I managed to hold out to the finish and win. A good result for me here.”Οπου φυσικα αυτο που δεν υπο8ηκε ηταν οτι ο Κωστας εχασε την νικη απο τα χερια του οταν στα μισα του αγωνα του κοπηκε η αριστερη βαση του κα8ισματος και με τα 1000 ζορια καταφερε να διατηρησει καποιο ρυθμο ωστε να κρατηθει 2ος αφου λιγο ακομα και θα χτυπαγε φραπε απο το κουνημα στις αριστερες στροφες και κατα την επιταχυνση και το φρεναρισμα.
Moutran’s two second places, in Class 2, also earned him maximum points in the Clio Cup ‘race within a race’, ending Alexandros Annivas winning streak in the Gulf Petrochem sponsored entry. In race one, Annivas was second, ahead of Willie Morrison who scored his first podium in the UAE. In race two the Moutran brothers, Nabil and Sami, were first and second respectively with Annivas third.

Nader Zuhour versus Costas Papantonis should be a thriller
In the Total UAE Touring Cars Nader Zuhour in his SEAT has a 13 points lead in the Class 1, from Costas Papantonis (Gulf Petrochem SEAT) with the pair each scoring a win last time out. This weekend they are likely to square up again in the two sprint races. Also in the mix should be Hamad Al Darmaki at the wheel of a SEAT.
In the Clio Cup, race within a race, Alexandros Annivas in the Gulf Petrochem Renault has his sights set on the title but has to contend with a host of rivals for the top spot on the podium this weekend. Among those will be a double pronged challenge from Duel Racing with Ramzi Moutran opting to give up his regular SEAT drive, to join his brother Nabil in the action packed Clio Cup battlefield. Willie Morrison is another one to watch in this ‘hot hatchback’ class.

Papantonis dominates Class 1 to finish with a double victory
On the bill on UAE National Race Day 8 at Dubai Autodrome on Friday, 2 March, was Round 6 of the Total UAE Touring Cars combined with Round 7 of the NGK UAE GT Championship and Round 5 of the Suzuki Swift Cup.Costas Papantonis took two wins in Class 1 of the Total UAE Touring Car Championship on the day at the wheel of his Gulf Petrochem SEAT as his title duel with championship leader Nader Zuhour intensified at Dubai Autodrome on Friday. The pair ran close together in the first race before it was red flagged for the track to be cleared of debris, but in race two Papantonis got going early and managed to edge out a a gap which he kept until the end. Zuhour was second in both races.
Former UAE Touring Car champion Papantonis said after his double wins, “It was a good day for our Gulf Petrochem team. The first race was a tough in the beginning but the second race was easier. Of course two wins makes it good for our championship chances and for sure we will be pushing Nader [Zuhour] to the very end.”

Total UAE Touring Car Championship
Class 1 title down to the wire – Zuhour versus PapantonisThe 2011/2012 UAE national circuit racing season comes to an end this weekend (on Friday, 13 April) at Dubai Autodrome, which will host the final rounds for the Total UAE Touring Cars and a new champion will be crowned at the end of the day.
All eyes will be on the Class 1 title battle in the Total UAE Touring Car Championship as Nader Zuhour arrives at the final round with 112 points to his credit, 29 points up on his closest rival Costas Papantonis, with 40 points – double the normal amount for the final day – up for grabs in the two sprint races.
Zuhour was in inspired form last time out at Yas Marina Circuit where he powered to two wins and arrives in Dubai with momentum on his side. After his race wins in Abu Dhabi the SEAT driver said, “I changed my approach in the cockpit and things came to me. These two wins are very meaningful in the context of the championship. I am taking the final two races one at a time and hopefully we will be rewarded at the end of the day.”
**Papantonis, on the other hand, has nothing to lose as he sets his sights on his third UAE Touring Car title – and if anyone can pull the proverbial ‘rabbit out of the hat’ it will be the gutsy Fujairah based Greek driver in the Gulf Petrochem backed SEAT.
On race day fans can expect an intriguing duel as Zuhour seeks to protect his points tally and Papantonis goes on the attack with the 2011/2012 Total UAE Touring Car crown at stake.**
At Yas Marina last month Umair Khan notched up his third consecutive Total UAE Touring Cars Class 2 title, in his Lap57 Honda, and will be looking to crown a superb season with a couple of wins. Out to spoil Khan’s party will be the likes of Rupesh Channake (Lap57 Honda), Mike Scott (Opel Astra) and Jonathan Mullan (GNSS Racing Honda).
Freshly crowned as the inaugural Clio Cup champion, Alexandros Annivas will be on duty in the Gulf Petrochem Renault Clio, and will also be looking to end the season on a high, with experienced Martin Johnson making a rare outing and seeking to bag a win on the final day of the season.
Also on the bill on Friday is the last and decisive round of the MotorCity UAE Sportbikes championship, the final round of the Formula Gulf 1000 and another round of the Suzuki Swift Cup.Practice starts at 9:00am Friday morning, with first qualifying scheduled for 9:55am and the first race at 11:30am. The final race of the day will start at 15:40pm and will be followed by a ceremony to honour the 2011/2012 UAE National Champions.

Papantonis 2nd in 2011-2012 UAE Touring Car Campionship and Annivas crowned Champion in 21011-2012 UAE Cio Cup Championship
13 April 2012
The final race day of the 2011/2012 UAE national motorsport season took place at Dubai Autodrome on Friday (13 April) and on the day Nader Zuhour clinched the Total UAE Touring Car Championship joining Umair Khan and Alexandros Annivas as a champion of this year’s series.
Zuhour, driving a SEAT, arrived at the double points scoring finale leading the Class 1 championship and needed a strong showing on the day to keep at bay his main rival Costas Papantonis in the Gulf Petrochem SEAT.
By the end of the day Zuhour had notched up two wins and with that scooping the Total UAE Touring Car champion’s crown. He drove a calculated race, allowing Papantonis to set the early pace but then making his move when it mattered to score his sixth and seventh win of the season respectively.
Zuhour said, “I thank God for this achievement. It was really a great day, great races and great feeling to win this title. We worked hard all season and the turning point was when I changed my style and strategy to drive to the car’s strengths rather than bully it. I want to thank my team NFS who prepare my car, the organisers DAMC- the circuits Dubai Autodrome and Yas Marina Circuit.”
**Papantonis, twice before a UAE touring car champion, commented afterwards, “It was a season of ups and downs for me and my team. We started on a low, then got a good boost mid-season but then things went down again towards the end. But it was a good season, we learnt lessons and we will be back stronger than ever. I want to thank Gulf Petrochem for their support and commitment to our team. Congratulations to the champions.”
Umair Khan, who notched up the Total UAE Touring Cars Class 2 title last time out, also scored a pair of wins on the day in his Lap57 Honda to make it 13 victories out of 16 and an incredible run of 11 consecutive race wins.
Khan summed up his year, “Everything went according to plan. We started the year determined to raise our game and become more consistent. This we achieved as we had no problems, the car ran perfectly and the end I have my third championship. I am very happy.”
On the day in Race 1 Rupesh Channake (Lap57 Honda) took second place in Class 2, with Jonathan Mullan (Honda) taking third. In Race 2 they traded places with Mullan second and Channake third.
**Gulf Petrochem backed Alexandros Annivas was also a double winner on the day, taking top spot on the podium in the Clio Cup and consolidating his triumph in the inaugural single make championship.
Annivas said, “I am very happy today. It has been a tough season, we had some problems along the way not just mechanical, but also with penalties. But in the end we did it and I must thank Gulf Petrochem for their unwavering support. They were here cheering for us all the way and I am happy to be able to deliver the title for them. Also big thanks to my family especially my father (Costas Papantonis) who is my mentor.”**
Thus came to a close the 16 rounds, on eight race days, of the Total UAE Touring Car Championship which started in October last year.

uae national racing // touring car championship // every second counts
Seven seconds. That was all that stood between Costas Papantonis and victory as he entered the penultimate corner of the 2011/2012 UAE Touring Car Championship. Two laps earlier, the Grecian held a near-7s gap back to Class 1 rival Nader Zuhour in second place. Defeat seemed impossible.
Then with one lap left, Papantonis’ laptimes started to tumble and the Gulf Petrochem SEAT began cruising rather than tearing down the main straight. Something was clearly very wrong. And Zuhour was catching. Fast.
Surely not again! The paddock was abuzz. Race one had been all about Papantonis stealing a march over the field and disappearing into the distance after a rocket start from pole position. Then, just three laps from home, the SEAT Leon coasted to a halt on the main straight, drive gone and nothing the Grecian could do to stop Zuhour sweeping through for victory.
Papantonis would eventually get going again, but second in class – plus double points as a one-time offer for this, the final round of the season – meant only a DNF for his main rival would tilt the Championship balance back in his direction.
Race two: with half the final lap completed, Papantonis’ lead had plummeted from 6.9s to just shy of 3s as Jonathan Mullan un-lapped itself. A blown engine had destroyed his weekend last time out in Abu Dhabi, but the Brit was on a charge at the Autodrome.
A consistent albeit quiet run in race one brought Mullan third in-class behind the similarly Honda-powered Rupesh Chanaka. Countryman Mike Scott, back in the Championship for the end of year hurrah, followed home for fourth in-class in the opening gambit, but ended his day on pit road.
A striking contrast to Mullan, who came alive in the second affair. A poor start for race two left him trailing at the Class 2 tail end, but once up to speed, Mullan diced lap after lap with Chanaka down the main straight: no quarter asked, no quarter given. Squeezing the Sri Lankan at turn one, Mullan finally made it stick, and cruised home for Class 2 runners-up honours.
Unsurprisingly Umair Khan, a couple of seconds down the road in both outings, dominated Class 2 proceedings, his 2011/2012 title completing a championship hat-trick after success in 2009/2010 and 2010/2011. That’s another sticker in the rear window for next year.
Race two: Back at the front, recently crowned Renault Clio Cup winner Alexandros Annivas – in the sister Gulf Petrochem entry – scrambled past to unlap himself. Papantonis was short-shifting, fearing to push the ‘box for fear it would fail altogether. Entering the final sweeping right-hander, Zuhour was right with him.
Papantonis hugged the inside line: if the Jordanian was coming past, it would be the long way round. Maybe, just maybe, Zuhour’s tyres would skate for grip off-line, backing out of the throttle the only fail-safe. A small reprieve, but it might be enough. Right foot mashed and the drive likely to go at any second, surely Zuhour wouldn’t steal this at the flag. The circuit commentator was out of his seat.
Spectators in the stands strained to see, the rooftops of each SEAT line-astern disappearing behind parc ferme. Half a corner left. Who would be in front? Papantonis or Zuhour? Blue and white, or black and orange?
The clock hit zero, and one second later the leader flashed past, the Class 1 Championship in his pocket. Few would deny that Zuhour’s sprint around the outside of Papantonis at the final corner to steal victory was an unbelievably exciting climax to the season. Double winner Zuhour was jubilant, and – no question – a deserving Champion.
Papantonis, so cruelly fated twice in one weekend, was pragmatic in defeat, and received his well-earned plaudits. One wondered what would might have been if reliability had not given out at the worst possible moments. Seven seconds. Dwindled grid numbers didn’t stop this fight going down to the wire
