Maldonado future F1 unsure as motorsports funding scandal erupts in Venezuela
http://grandprix247.com/2013/10/22/mald ... venezuela/Venezuelan officials have frozen all disbursements of hard currency to automobile and motorcycle racers who compete abroad as they investigate a corruption scandal, which may impact the future of Pastor Maldonado in Formula 1.
Justice Minister Miguel Rodriguez told reporters that some motorsports athletes have obtained hard currency for “activities that were either fictitious or overpriced.”
(...)
Sports Minister Alejandra Benitez said in a newspaper interview published Thursday that an initial investigation into the Cadivi disbursements found that one driver got $ 66 million. She did not name the driver.
(...)
Among the affected drivers is E.J. Viso, who apparently canceled his participation in this weekend’s IndyCar Series’ season finale in Fontana, California. Viso was listed as being “ill.”
(...)
Benitez was quoted in the interview in Ultimas Noticias as saying that she had discovered that her signature had been forged on 60 disbursement files for hard currency.
Maldonado who is bank rolled by PDVSA is reportedly also under investigation which could impact the Williams F1 team who have a substantial sponsorship partnership with PDVSA ensuring Maldonado’s seat with the British outfit.

Τα προβλήματα στην Lotus είναι πάρα πολλά και ακριβώς επειδή υπάρχει σοβαρό οικονομικό πρόβλημα έχει αρχίσει να αποδεκατίζεται και από έμψυχο δυναμικό, αεροδυναμιστές, μηχανικούς κλπ που πάνε σε γύρω μαγαζιά ενώ και αυτοί που έχουν μείνει ψάχνονται για να φύγουν.Πόσο αλήθεια είναι τελικά αυτό; Πόσοι και ποιοι είναι αυτοί που έφυγαν (πλην του Allison);

Vettel even better than Senna - Ecclestone
Oct.24 (GMM) Gerhard Berger thinks Sebastian Vettel is the best driver on the grid today, while Bernie Ecclestone says the German might be F1's all-time great.
If Fernando Alonso fails to finish either first or second in India on Sunday, Red Bull's Vettel will be guaranteed his fourth consecutive drivers' title.
Bild newspaper said the 26-year-old will scoop a EUR 5 million title-winning bonus, while each Red Bull employee will go home with an extra EUR 12,500 in their regular pay.
Berger, who was the team boss at Toro Rosso when Vettel won his first ever Grand Prix in 2008, thinks the German is now the class of the field.
'I have always put Vettel behind Alonso,' he told APA news agency, 'but I think at the moment Alonso is focused too much on himself, becoming unstable.
So while he is occupied with himself, Vettel gets one title after the next,' added former Ferrari and McLaren driver Berger.'I think Vettel is clearly the best driver in Formula One now.'
Michael Schumacher agrees that Alonso has done himself no favours recently.
'He put himself on a path of stones,' the seven time world champion told Bild newspaper, without elaborating.
'Things have happened that were not constructive,' the former Ferrari driver added, still referring to Alonso.
Red Bull team boss Christian Horner would not disagree, saying the fate of Vettel's teammate Mark Webber over the past few years proves Vettel's class.
'Mark Webber is a very good driver,' he is quoted by Spox.
'Before Vettel came into the team, his (Webber's) reputation was as a future champion. But this year in qualifying, Sebastian Vettel has beaten Mark 14 times and won nine times.
'If it was all about the car, we would be first and second in the drivers' championship, but we are not,' Horner insisted.
'For me, he is now on par with Juan Manuel Fangio, Jim Clark, Jackie Stewart, Ayrton Senna, Alain Prost and Michael Schumacher,' Horner added.
F1 chief executive Ecclestone thinks Vettel is even better than that.
'People don't know how many titles Senna would have won,' he told Bloomberg, 'but Vettel is probably the best we've had.'
Ecclestone admitted Vettel's dominance has hurt TV ratings slightly.
'People complain about him winning everything,' he said, 'but the racing is good.
'It's a bit like with Roger Federer or Muhammad Ali,' he explained. 'Vettel is the best there is and people want to be there when he gets beat.'
Vettel, however, has not been a universally popular figure this year, but Schumacher thinks that is more Red Bull's fault than his.
'If you win with a traditional team, a brand full of emotion and history, that is the ultimate.
'And that would certainly change one or two things in his (Vettel's) situation,' said the great German.
'Whether he would have had the same successes with Ferrari,' Schumacher acknowledged, 'is a different sheet of paper.'

FIA checks Red Bull for bending floor
http://www.grandprix.com/ns/ns26687.htmlAnother secret of Red Bull's dominance in the second half of the season is emerging.
Germany's Auto Motor und Sport said former Stewart and Jaguar designer Gary Anderson, now a technical pundit for the BBC, floated the theory about the RB9.
The car, which in Sebastian Vettel's hands has won the last six grands prix on the trot, caught Anderson's attention recently when images of a rear-facing thermal camera were broadcast.
The images show that the floor just underneath the drivers' feet, the so-called 'tea-tray', was running extremely hot at slow speeds.
Anderson believes Adrian Newey may have found a way to 'lift the 'tea tray' away from the track as it gets hot', allowing a lower front ride height.
Auto Motor und Sport reported on Tuesday that Force India also believes the Anderson theory, and that such a solution would be illegal.
So, in India, the FIA's technical delegate Jo Bauer reportedly put Anderson's theory to the test, heating the 'tea tray' to a temperature of 300 degrees C.
'The result? It did not move,' said Auto Motor und Sport correspondent Michael Schmidt. 'Consequently, the Red Bull RB9 is legal, at least in this area.'

Alonso turned down Red Bull offer for 2008 after McLaren fiasco
http://grandprix247.com/2013/10/31/alon ... en-fiasco/After a tumultuous and controversy packed season with McLaren, Fernando Alonso came close to moving to Red Bull for the 2008 season, but after lengthy negotiations, he eventually turned down the offer.
That is the claim of Spain’s El Mundo Deportivo newspaper, reporting that the Spaniard was the energy drink-owned team’s “first choice” before he decided instead to return to Renault.
According to correspondent Elvira Gonzalez, Red Bull’s talks with Alonso followed the double World Champion’s acrimonious split with McLaren at the end of 2007.
“Fernando Alonso had it in his hands to change the course of his own – and Formula 1′s – history in November 2007,” Gonzalez wrote.
But Alonso actually opted to return to Renault, while Red Bull stuck with existing drivers Mark Webber and David Coulthard.
Coulthard was then replaced by a young Sebastian Vettel for 2009, while Alonso left Renault for Ferrari at the end of that season.(...)
