'Ferrari won't be beaten' - Paul Stoddart
'Ferrari won't be beaten' - 24 February 2005Paul Stoddart does not agree that Ferrari will be defeated by either Renault or McLaren in next Sunday's Australian grand prix.
The Australian owner of F1 minnow Minardi said the scarlet squad would again easily secure both drivers' and constructors' championships in 2005.
He said in Melbourne that Ferrari's 'selfish' decision to snub the other teams' test limit had put them out of reach.
'They are doing (it) against the other nine,' Stoddart remarked.
'It's sad that (Ferrari) aren't interested in the sport, they're only interested in Ferrari.'
He dismissed Ferrari's apparent defeat in winter testing as sandbagging. Stoddart added: 'They're going to wipe the floor with everyone.'

chumacher may race beyond 2006
Schumacher may race beyond 2006
F1's oldest and most successful driver, seven time champion Michael Schumacher, has refused to rule out prolonging his contract beyond 2006. The German, 36, said racing on would depend on the similar extension of 'other decision makers', like principal Jean Todt and Ross Brawn, at Ferrari.
The 83-grand prix winner also said he doesn't feel his age, 'which is good, if I want to continue (racing).' And he can count on the support of wife Corinna, and children Gina Maria (8) and Mick (5) throughout the quest for drivers' title number eight in '05.
Michael said the kids 'watch me on TV' every second Sunday, but only for a lap or two. 'Then they run off and start playing again,' he smirked. -

f1 devoid of heroesJacques Villeneuve says rule changes and Ferrari's dominance are not to blame for making Formula One boring. Instead, the former world champion blames the corporations involved in the sport for killing personalities.
'You want to know why formula one is so boring now?' Villeneuve rhetorically tells the Guardian newspaper. 'It's obvious. There're no heroes in racing these days.
'All these corporations don't want their drivers to ruin their image so you can't say what you think. You're basically not allowed to have a personality. How can you have any heroes if you don't allow personalities?'
Villeneuve returns to Formula One full time this season following a one year sabbatical. He drove in the final three races of the year for Renault, failing to secure any points for the French-based team.
Villeneuve, known for his brash comments in the past, says Kimi Raikkonen's recent strip club antics should not surprise people. He says the image of Raikkonen as Formula One's 'ice man' is just another corporate fabrication.
'In the paddock Kimi tries to look one-dimensional,' he says. 'It's sad that you don't see drivers being real people. Kimi's image is so obviously fabricated because he's not the Ice Man. It goes back to the corporations. You end up fabricating this image because that's what they want.'
Villeneuve points to McLaren's public rebuke of Raikkonen's drunken antics in an attempt to protect their corporate sponsors. CEO Martin Whitmarsh said the team would take 'whatever steps we need' to ensure that the Finn understood the seriousness of the situation.
As for the battle on the track, Villeneuve doesn't see any dramatic changes at the top, predicting another Ferrari championship in 2005.
'It'll be the same as last year,' says the Canadian, down playing his chances with the Swiss-based Sauber team.
'I don't know how high I can aim with Sauber. I'm competitive but that doesn't stop me from being realistic.'
As for the challengers, Villeneuve is quick to include former teammate and nemesis Jenson Button.
'People always said that there was bad blood between me and Jenson Button. But that was just part of (David) Richards' plan. It was never about me and Jenson - we actually got on.
'Jenson is very fast. There's no doubt about that. He's also a hard worker. Jenson's up there with the best but he's yet to win a race. That's the next step. But when he says him and Kimi and (Juan Pablo) Montoya are Schumacher's equal, I just look at Michael's seven world championships. He's far ahead.'
Villeneuve, the only driver on the grid who can lay claim to having beaten Schumacher for the world title, says the current era of Formula One allows for more risk taking, something that wouldn't have been possible if he had raced during his father's time.
'It's better that I'm racing now,' he says. 'I try to judge the risks but we all make mistakes - so in the 1970s I would've definitely died... I wouldn't have survived.'
Villeneuve went on to recall a recent testing accident, which he termed a 'big one'.
'I was going way over 200kph. I smashed into the wall real hard but it was at the correct angle so I didn't get hurt. At first, when I spun, I didn't think it was going to be too bad, but then I looked in my mirrors and could see the wall coming up fast. I thought, 'Oh darn, this is going to hurt.' But in five minutes I was back to normal.

Schumacher: I may not win
Michael Schumacher has admitted he may not win Sunday's first race of a long 2005 calendar. At a press conference in Melbourne, the German said not getting the brand new F2005 until May might damage his and Ferrari's points tally.
'It's a matter of fact,' said Schumacher, 36. 'But you don't win a championship by winning the first race. You have to have a strategy for the whole season.'
He suggested that Ferrari were so far ahead in recent years because rivals did 'a rather poor job.' 'You don't blame Ferrari,' said Michael, 'you blame the others -- but it looks like they're doing a pretty good job now.'

Michael's kids get 2 euros a week.
Schumacher's children get two euros a weekMichael Schumacher is one of the world's best-paid sportsman but the Formula One world champion is a cheapskate when it comes to his children's pocket money.
Schumacher, whose annual earnings are estimated at $80 million, gives his eight-year-old daughter Gina-Maria and his son Mick, who is six this month, two euros ($2.64) a week each.
'They have to learn wealth isn't automatic,' the German Ferrari driver told Stern magazine in an interview.
'They get, just like other children, two euros allowance per week. They can either save it or buy something they really want with it.'
But Schumacher added that lavish presents did sometimes slip through, saying his father got a mini go-kart for the children a few years ago.
'In the meantime they've both become good drivers,' Schumacher said.

Good interview with Jean Todt on pitpass

F1 achieves the impossible: it’s an even bigger bore than ever.
Achieving the impossible is, by the very nature of the phrase, impossible. But Formula One motor racing has managed just that by making the sport even more boring than last year.
The enthusiasts who tuned into ITV at 3am yesterday for the Australian Grand Prix would no doubt disagree. Don’t take my word for it, though. Hark to those paid by the broadcasters to put a gloss on the show in order to attract – and retain – an audience.
“A reasonably entertaining grand prix,” commentator James Allen said in language that would make Murray Walker turn in his armchair. A tremendously dull race would be the rough translation.
“Different,” was the diplomatic assessment of Tony Jardine. Much the same, in other words. “Unbelievable,” Mark Blundell commented. Unbelievably bad, that is.
What was different, of course, and what was hailed as a triumph by little Jim Rosenthal, was what happened to Michael Schumacher.
Due to a sudden cloudburst during the first practice session (sic) on Saturday, the seven times world champion qualified at the back of the grid. He made little progress throughout the actual race and eventually crashed out, following a rather tame supermarket trolley-like bump with Nick Heidfield. It helped that the German bogeyman appeared to be at fault. ( Thought NH was also German.)
Jardine gave the game away. “A lot of people will be very relieved,” he said of Schumacher’s miserable performance. “That’s what has given us a great start.”
In other words, it mattered not that, apart from David Coulthard slipping inside Jacques Villeneuve at the first bend, viewers never saw a single overtaking manoeuvre for a third of the race and precious few thereafter; it mattered not that the rule changed had made Sunday drivers out of everyone, promoting the conservative over the daredevil; it mattered not that the removal of tyre changes had turned pitting into “stop at a gas station at the side of the road”, as Martin Brundle put it.
It mattered only that he was routed.
Brundle, as good an expert analyst as there is anywhere on television, is not the sort to remain sanguine in the midst of such rubbish.
“I feel as if I want to get out of the commentary box, put the red light on, stop the race and say: ‘What are you doing?’ he said at one stage. “I am not at all sure that this is progress.”
At least the Brundle live walkabout in the pit lane immediately prior to the start remains a real treat. You never quite know if Brundle is going to be told to get lost when sticking his microphone into the face of someone with the request; “A word for British television?”
Nicholas Cage obliged, “I am very, very excited,” said Cage in a voice that barely indicated a pulse. He could have been talking in his sleep behind those Hollywood dark glasses. Maybe he knew what was coming.
“Very, very excited? I would hate to see Nicholas Cage laid back, “ said Rosenthal, exploiting the potential for ad libbing.
With good interviews, intelligent comment and imaginative presentation, ITV try their best to make a good job of a bad job. On this evidence, Formula 1 is even more of a procession, albeit not one behind Michael Schumacher.
Any bets it will be again before long?
