Despite all the harsh condemnations, it is clear that Michael Schumacher still has friends and allies out there, who are not about to join the legions of people who have had a pop at the former World Champion in the last two weeks.

On Tuesday evening, former F1 racer Ricardo Patrese criticised what he has described as the 'witch-hunt' of the German since he stalled his Ferrari during qualifying at the Monaco GP.

'What's happening against Schumacher is something from the days of the Inquisition, it's a witch-hunt,' he told Autosprint.

'Back in my days nothing like this would have happened in F1: dirty moves on track have always occurred to defend a position or a qualifying spot.**

'He's my friend and I believe him when he says it wasn't foul playing, but all the other drivers, even the worst ones, are going wild in criticising.

'Who do they think they are by going so heavily against a seven-time world champion?'

The clearly irate Italian concluded: 'Today people say how Schumacher deliberately parked it at Rascasse.

'I think this is either taking the ****, or it's a sign of how poor is the F1 environment nowadays. People say F1 is in a crisis: of course it is, with people like these.'

Was Schumacher in the wrong in Monaco and will it cost him the world championship?

As I said last year, when BAR-Honda took only a three-race penalty for running a dodgy fuel tank, you‘―re not cheating in F1 unless you get caught.

On the basis that Michael was ‘°caught‘±, of course you have to say that he was in the wrong.

To my mind, he didn‘―t break any rules and the wording behind the Stewards‘― decision was somewhat confusing. It spoke of ‘°intention‘± ¨C and I don‘―t recall ‘°intention‘± being a part of the Sporting Code.

It‘―s pretty clear that the Stewards ¨C like virtually everyone else with a brain - believed that he deliberately stopped the car, but I just wish they had said that and nothing more.

As it is, they have opened up a whole new spectrum of precedents.

Actually, I think Michael‘―s 2006 championship chances, and thus maybe his future, would have seemed much more fragile had he won Monaco from that dubiously-earned ‘°pole‘±.

I think he would have been shocked by the public backlash and for the first time in his life might have said, ‘°Well, I don‘―t need this any more.‘±

As it was, the whole thing was amputated quickly and he just put his head down and got on with it.

I watched Michael walking out in front of the crowd before climbing into his car for the race at Monaco.** He received a warmer reception even than Fernando. I think that meant a lot to him.

As for the offence, so what?

Personally, **I don‘―t think it was any worse than a footballer incurring a penalty for a reflex foul. **Michael races only to win and thus he has this other, impulsive side to his existence.

What Michael did was in my view no worse than swearing on the radio in the heat of the moment (for which there is no penalty) or, like Nick Heidfeld in Austria, 2002, completely mis-judging your brake temperatures at a re-start and seriously injuring another driver in the accident that followed (also no penalty).

Jenson Button is better than Michael Schumacher, Fernando Alonso and Kimi Raikkonen. A bold statement, but one that Jenson himself believes, and he's certain he'll get the opportunity to prove it.

'The Michael Schumacher's of this world, Fernando Alonso, Kimi Raikkonen - personally I think I can do a better job than all of them,' said Jenson Button to the Sunday People. 'Some of that is because of the confidence I have inside. Maybe being big-headed means that if I'm in the best car on the grid, or even a car equal to those of the best drivers on the grid, I'll win because I have the confidence to achieve that.'

Winning the world championship remains Jenson's ultimate aim, but it's currently looking a somewhat unlikely target. However well Honda have done in recent years, there's always been on other team making a big step ahead. This year has been poor, with inconsistent performances from the team hindering development, but that's not put Button off.

'I'd be devastated if I didn't win the championship because it's what I've always wanted to achieve,' he added. 'I work so hard - harder than people realise. If I didn't win the world championship in the future I won't be able to live with myself, probably. But Honda won't leave F1 until they win the championship.

'I'm not satisfied because I'm disappointed to have spent so long not winning races. I've been asked the question so many times about not winning in 100 races. But nobody would have won a race in the cars that I had in those 100 races. I'm 100 per cent sure of that.'

Button's F1 career hasn't been easy, with the driver going through three teams since his debut in 2000, before eventually ending up at BAR, now Honda. Despite two contract disputes during his time at Brackley, he's glad he's settled at Honda, and has committed his medium-term future to the team.

'Last year I realised just how strong the team were,' he explained. 'I went to the factory after the team were disqualified at Imola and it was amazing. They were all so upbeat and I saw how dedicated they were working relentlessly to turn things around.'

The contract disputes have harmed Jenson's image, with fans in the US particularly upset at his perceived disloyalty, but that's been put behind him. While image matters, winning matters more.

'Public opinion does matter to me because **I'm very patriotic **and I love the atmosphere at Silverstone,' Jenson added. 'If I won I think that place would go crazy. The most important thing in my life is racing in F1 and challenging the world's best drivers. I think that's what I've been put on this earth to do and it's something I'm good at.'
