Flavio Briatore and Geoff Willis were wrong to ask the FIA to correct a possible tyre inequity next year, according to Ross Brawn.

Ferrari's Technical Director says that it is the fault of Michelin, not the governing body, that every team will have to switch to Bridgestone rubber for the 2007 season. Michelin will pull out of F1 at the end of the year.

Briatore (Renault) and Willis (Honda), both chiefs of presently Michelin-shod outfits, reckon the FIA should change the tyre rules so that they do not lag behind Bridgestone's existing teams like Ferrari.

'They should go and complain to Michelin,' Brawn told reporters at Monaco.

He thinks it is 'entirely fair and proper' that squads like Ferrari, but also Williams and Toyota who astutely switched to Bridgestone over the winter, enjoy the benefit.

'It is not our fault that Michelin is pulling out,' Brawn said.

McLaren-Mercedes' Norbert Haug has defended the team after Kimi Raikkonen suffered two near-identical mechanical failures in Monte Carlo. The second, Mercedes' competition director reckoned to 'RTL', cost the Finn victory on Sunday.

''The heat shields near the exhaust are obviously too closely together,'' Haug said, explaining why fires doused the Finn's power both on Thursday during practice and in the race.

Haug said McLaren, which introduced the new cooling system at Monaco, was right to push the envelope in the chase to return to victory.

He explained : ''We have to push. You may criticise us and say that our cooling systems should have been better, but if you do not push to the extreme then you will not catch up in F1.''

Haug, meanwhile, played down the possibility that the problem could re-occur at Silverstone in two weeks.

lap record for Michael Schumacher

Michael Schumacher this afternoon broke the unofficial lap record at Circuit de Catalunya with a best lap of 1:13.471s in his Bridgestone-shod Ferrari, eclipsing the previous best set last month by Jenson Button (1:13.522s). With Luca Badoer destroying his 248 F1, it was certainly a mixed day for the Ferrari team as they prepare for the British Grand Prix.

Heikki Kovalainen was second fastest for Renault, six-tenths off the ultimate pace while Ricardo Zonta was an encouraging third fastest for Toyota. Nico Rosberg was fourth fastest in his Williams Cosworth ahead of Giancarlo Fisichella and Jarno Trulli.

Pedro de la Rosa shared a McLaren Mercedes with Juan Pablo Montoya and was seventh fastest ahead of Jacques Villeneuve, Jenson Button and Luca Badoer. Testing resumes at the circuit again tomorrow.

πήρε το ρεκόρ από τον V10 του Μπατόν (1.13.5), ενώ το best για V8 πριν τον ΜΣ ήταν 1.13.9 από τον δοκιμαστή της Ρενώ, οπότε νομίζω πάμε καλά.
