Exclusive interview with Kimi Raikkonen
McLaren’s Kimi Raikkonen may be a man of few words, but he chooses those words well, leaving the listener with little doubt of his feelings. At the moment it appears he is feeling pretty relaxed. He knows that he has twice lost out on championships he probably should have won, but he also knows the best may well be yet to come…
Q: Twelve races, one pole, five podiums, but no win - you cannot be satisfied with your season so far. How do you feel about the situation?
Kimi Raikkonen: Obviously I am not happy how the season has gone so far. After finishing second in the championship last year I expected to be challenging for the title. But after a couple of races it was clear we are not competitive enough.Q: Can the team’s moderate performance be put down to a specific reason? You retired twice due to accidents, but in five races you simply didn’t seem to have the pace...
KR: Its not just one specific thing, we need to work on the whole package.Q: Ahead of you lies a difficult decision regarding McLaren: stay or go. The Ferrari and Renault rumours are common knowledge, but last week Mercedes’ Norbert Haug said that if you were smart, you’d stay. Are you smart?
KR: I am comfortable with being in a position that I can choose where I drive next year.Q: Believe the rumours and in theory you can choose between three teams for 2007. What would draw you to Ferrari, to Renault - or persuade you to stay where you are?
KR: I am not going to go into specifics on the pros and cons on each team.Q: When will you announce your decision, and what influence does Michael Schumacher’s future have on it?
KR: I will announce my decision when the time is right, and Michael’s decision has no influence on my future.Q: Staying with McLaren would mean having Fernando Alonso as your team mate. What could that mean for your position within the team?
KR: Fernando joining the team is not different from Juan Pablo (Montoya) joining the team two years ago. I would have equal number one status.Q: When you learned that Fernando had signed with (McLaren boss) Ron Dennis, what was your first thought? You have spent years trying to win the title with McLaren, and now your key rival could walk in and reap the rewards of your labours…
KR: Its Ron’s team and up to him who he decides drives for McLaren. I could have been a two-time world champion with McLaren, but things did not work out due to circumstances beyond my control.Q: With two thirds of the season gone, what can you now realistically expect for this year?
KR: Clearly the world championship is not possible this year. So the next best thing I can aim for is wins. I could have won at Monaco and Canada this year, but again things did not go my way.Q: Have you been surprised by Juan Pablo’s untimely departure?
KR: I don’t think about JPM’s decision as it does not concern me. -

Briatore: Kimi & Massa at Ferrari / Kovalainen at Renault
Kovalainen front runner for Renault seat
By Jonathan Noble Friday, August 4th 2006, 23:26 GMT
Renault boss Flavio Briatore has dropped the firmest hint yet that Heikki Kovalainen will be signed to race for the French team next year.
Briatore had been chasing Kimi Raikkonen to replace Fernando Alonso, who is moving to McLaren, but the Finn appears set to make the switch to Ferrari in 2007.
Although Briatore has drawn short of confirming his driver plans, he said at the Hungarian Grand Prix that his team were ready to give Kovalainen his chance.
'There are many drivers in F1, not just the drivers that everyone knows,' he said. 'There are plenty of engineering talents in F1 that people don't know. We always talk only about a few people - like Adrian Newey, who went from McLaren to Red Bull.
'But there are plenty of other people in F1 who are good when it comes to managing a team. Everybody thought that when we lost (former technical director) Mike Gascoyne that Renault would collapse, but we won the championship.
'And with drivers, it is the same. Will we not get Raikkonen? Okay. But there is the possibility to have a good time with a young driver like Heikki. We don't need to wait for anything; he can get in the car straight away.
'We know all the drivers available, but it is best to have someone who has done 20,000km of testing and is ready to race in F1. Even Robert Kubica was mine - and he is a bloody good driver.
'I lost him, but no one is perfect. Although that wasn't my mistake, it was someone else's.'
The news on Kovalainen rules out the Briatore-managed Mark Webber from Renault, but the Australian is now being strongly linked with a move to Red Bull Racing.
Briatore declined to elaborate on where Webber was heading, but he did make it clear that the Australian's deal was sorted for 2007 - although a final contract may not have yet been signed.
'The situation is settled, and it has been settled for some days,' said Briatore about Webber. 'He does not have a problem and he has got a good future in front of him.'
Briatore's opinion is that Michael Schumacher will retire at the end of the season - leaving Ferrari to run Kimi Raikkonen and Felipe Massa in 2007.
'On this cloudy day in Hungary, I must say that my opinion, and it is my opinion, is that Schumacher has decided he will stop,' he said. 'Ferrari will race with Raikkonen and Massa.'
ελπίζω να παραμείνει ο Σούμι

Michael Schumacher and Ferrari's technical director Ross Brawn were aggrieved at the severity of the penalty handed to the seven-time world champion at the Hungarian Grand Prix on Saturday.
Schumacher had two seconds added to his qualifying times for overtaking two cars under red-flag conditions during practice.
The penalty in effect cancelled out Fernando Alonso’s similar handicap, incurred on Friday for two separate offences, and put the title rivals back on level terms.
Although he denied having said that the penalty was unjust, Schumacher hinted strongly that he regards it as unduly severe, suggesting that video footage explained his actions.
“Watch the pictures and you may understand why I have been doing what I have been doing,” he told ITV Sport’s Ted Kravitz after qualifying.
“And you may then judge yourself whether this penalty, in relation to many other penalties, is the right one or not.”
Brawn admitted that Schumacher had contravened the rules and that a penalty was warranted.
But he claimed the German’s offence was comparable to Alonso overtaking under the yellow flag on Friday – which accounted for only half the Renault driver’s two-second penalty – and questioned whether the two drivers had been treated even-handedly.
“I think people will have to judge for themselves because it’s difficult for us to see the consistency,” Brawn told Kravitz.
“You’ve got one driver [Alonso] who almost causes an accident with another driver and overtakes under a yellow.
“And yellow is a sign of danger and red is a sign of danger.
“So one accumulated two seconds and one had a full two seconds so I leave it to you to judge.”
Race stewards confirmed that Alonso was one of the drivers Schumacher passed while the red flag was out.
While he stopped short of accusing his rival of deliberately slowing in front of him, Schumacher hinted that he was the victim of gamesmanship.
“Those pictures are available and certainly Fernando is involved in this [incident], yes, absolutely,” he said.

*Red Bull is on the verge of announcing that Mark Webber will spearhead the 2007 line up alongside Scottish veteran David Coulthard.
Team owner Dietrich Mateschitz, who is visiting the Budapest paddock this weekend, is quoted by Austria's national broadcaster Osterreichischer Rundfunk as offering high praise for 29-year-old Webber.
Webber, who raced for Jaguar before Ford sold it to Mateschitz, is presently 'on the market' after failing to agree terms to stay at Williams beyond this year.
