I have a 2007 subaru impreza 2.5l, my car can cold start and sit all day without overheating, once I start moving it redlines. Also, If I start driving on the highway I can drive 200+ miles without issue, only when I coast down hill and then go up hill again does it start to overheat.
Once I get it up to speed it cools back down and then fluctuates after driving great distances. I have replaced the thermostat and radiator. No issues and car is running strong as death and only has 80k miles. Also heater is blowing cold air, and there is an occasional whistle noise. When it overheats and I stop there is coolant coming from the coolant reservoir and it is overflowing.
There is no white milky substance or condensation under oil cap or on dip stick and no oil in coolant reservoir.
Please, any information would be helpful. Please feel free to call me an idiot if it sounds like something extremely simple.

Hi Kev,
Actually, it doesn't sound simple at all. The first thing I would do is to try to get any air bubbles out of the system. Any workshop can do that for you. Also check if your cooling liquid is the proper one for your engine. Now, when it overheats, is it only the gauge telling you so, or does the car actually make a fizzlnig sound and loses power? It's a good thing that your oil hasn't turned milky though, as that would mean a burst head gasket.
Cheers,
