NEW YORK -- Saturn is taking dead aim at the mid-sized crossover market with the Outlook, which goes on sale late this year.

The Outlook is the third of three vehicles that Saturn plans to introduce this year as it tries to revitalize the brand and move it upmarket. The two others are the Sky roadster and the mid-sized Aura sedan.

'Sky, Aura and Outlook all raise the bar significantly when it comes to execution, for distinctive exterior styling to very refined interiors,' GM Vice Chairman Robert Lutz said at the New York auto show.

Saturn is targeting Honda Pilot and Chrysler Pacifica buyers with the new crossover.

Prices for the Pilot start at $27,545, and the Pacifica at $26,045. Both prices include shipping.

Prices for the Outlook have not been given, but it is expected to be the most expensive model in Saturn's line. Saturn's top-priced model, the Relay minivan, starts at $23,490, including shipping.

The Outlook is the first of three crossovers that are expected to share GM's new front-drive Lambda vehicle architecture. All-wheel drive is optional.

The Outlook offers eight-passenger seating. The third row accommodates three adults. To ease access to the third row, the second-row seat cushions pivot upward. Then the entire seat assembly, which is on tracks, can be slid forward to rest against the front seats.

The Outlook has a long wheelbase for a mid-sized crossover - 118.9 inches - and this enhances second-row legroom.

One engine is available: GM's 267-hp, 3.6-liter V-6. The engine features variable valve timing and produces 247 lbs.-ft. of torque. GM's new six-speed automatic transmission is standard.

The new crossover wagon from the brand will arrive in showrooms later this year wearing a sticker price of $27,990 for the front-drive Outlook XE. The all-wheel-drive XE model will start from $29,990. Front-drive models will get 18/26 mpg, while AWD editions will get 17/24 mpg, Saturn added. Standard features include three-row seating with a sliding second-row seat, stability control, side and curtain airbags, and a 3.6-liter, 270-hp V-6 engine. An uprated XR edition will start from $30,290, the GM brand said in its release.
