                                  Συμβόλαια του αμερικανικού στρατού για την προμήθεια μεγάλης ποσότητας του βακτηρίου του άνθρακα αποκαλύφθηκαν από οργάνωση κατά των βιολογικών όπλων.

                                  Αν και το στέλεχος του βακτηρίου που θα χρησιμοποιηθεί στις έρευνες βιοασφάλειας δεν είναι παθογόνο, η παραγγελία εγείρει ερωτήματα όσον αφορά την τήρηση της Συνθήκης Βιολογικών Όπλων -τα υλικά που αγοράζει ο στρατός των ΗΠΑ θα μπορούσαν να χρησιμοποιηθούν στην παραγωγή κάποιου θανατηφόρου στελέχους.

                                  Σύμφωνα με το New Scientist, η αμερικανο-γερμανική οργάνωση Sunshine Project έφερε στο φως φετινά συμβόλαια με τα οποία το Πεδίο Δοκιμών Dugway στη Γιούτα συμφωνεί με εταιρείες για την προμήθεια τόνων του βάκιλλου του άνθρακα. Ο αμερικανικός στρατός προμηθεύεται επίσης εξοπλισμό για την παραγωγή άλλων βιολογικών παραγόντων.

                                  Ένα από τα συμβόλαια «βιολογικών προμηθειών» αναφέρει: «Η εταιρεία πρέπει να έχει τη δυνατότητα και την πρόθεση να καλλιεργήσει Bacillus anthracis, στέλεχος Sterne, σε ποσότητες των 1.500 λίτρων». Αλλα συμβόλαια αφορούν την προμήθεια εξοπλισμού για την καλλιέργεια άγνωστου βιολογικού παράγοντα σε ποσότητες των 3.000 λίτρων, αλλά και την αγορά νεκρών προβάτων για τη δοκιμή αποτεφρωτήρα που προορίζεται για τυχόν μολυσμένα κοπάδια.

                                  Η αποκάλυψη προκάλεσε άμεσα αντιδράσεις στο εσωτερικό των ΗΠΑ. «Εγείρει ένα σημαντικό ερώτημα όσον αφορά το πώς οι ΗΠΑ θα αποδείξουν ότι συμμορφώνονται με τη Συνθήκη Βιολογικών Όπλων, εφόσον αυτές οι δεξαμενές αρχίσουν να λειτουργούν» σχολιάζει ο Αλαν Πίαρσον, διευθυντής του τμήματος βιολογικών όπλων στο Κέντρο Ελέγχου και Μη Διάδοσης Όπλων στην Ουάσινγκτον.

                                  Ο βάκιλλος του άνθρακα προσβάλλει συνήθως το δέρμα ζώων. Σε σπάνιες περιπτώσεις μπορεί να περάσει στους πνεύμονες και στην κυκλοφορία του αίματος, οπότε είναι σχεδόν πάντα θανατηφόρος. Από τη στιγμή που θα εκδηλωθούν τα πρώτα συμπτώματα, η καταπολέμηση με αντιβιοτικά είναι σχεδόν αδύνατη.

                                  Οι ΗΠΑ εγκατέλειψαν την παραγωγή βιολογικών όπλων το 1969, αν και μικρές ποσότητες του θανατηφόρου στελέχους Ames παράγονταν στο Dugway τουλάχιστον μέχρι το 1998.

                                  Αν και προς το παρόν δεν είναι γνωστό πού θα χρησιμοποιηθεί ο άνθρακας που παρήγγειλε η στρατιωτική βάση, οι ειδικοί εικάζουν ότι προορίζεται για δοκιμές απολύμανσης ή για δοκιμές πυραύλων σχεδιασμένων να εξουδετερώνουν αποθέματα βιολογικών όπλων.

                                  Ένα άλλο, πιο ανησυχητικό ενδεχόμενο είναι ότι ο βάκιλλος θα χρησιμοποιηθεί σε έρευνες που αφορούν τη διασπορά του βακτηρίου μετά την απελεθέρωσή του στην ατμόσφαιρα από βόμβες ή ψεκαστικά αεροσκάφη.
