GM and Fiat may share again; mid-sized platform has potential to carry 1 million vehicles a yearBy LUCA CIFERRI | Automotive News Europe
Fiat S.p.A. and General Motors are near a decision to develop a common platform for the Fiat Stilo and Opel Astra.
The plan is in an analytical phase, said Fiat Auto CEO Giancarlo Boschetti in a presentation to financial analysts.
GM Europe declined to comment. It is working on a redesigned Astra that will appear at the Frankfurt auto show in September and go on sale in early 2004. The new Astra uses an evolution of the current Astra T platform.
The middle-range architecture platform would be the basis of the replacements for the Stilo in 2007 and the successor to the redesigned Astra.
The cars compete in Europe's largest market segment, called the C segment, which includes the Volkswagen Golf. Boschetti has said
1 million vehicles would be produced off the platform annually. The middle-range team would be based at Opel in Russelsheim, Germany.
Boschetti said existing common platforms with GM are yielding a 5 percent reduction in development costs. 'But we are fighting like hell to reach 10 percent,' he said.
Fiat and GM have two common platforms:
- The premium vehicle architecture project begun in late 2000 has been developed in Sweden by Saab and Alfa Romeo. Alfa will use the platform for its 'Project 939' models, the sedan and station wagon that will replace the 156, plus new editions of the Spider and GTV Coupe.
The 939 sedan will debut in the spring of 2005 and the Spider in early 2006. The 939 cars will lead the return of Alfa Romeo to the U.S. market starting in 2007, together with the compact crossover previewed in Geneva by the Kamal concept car.
Constrained by financial difficulties, Saab abandoned plans to use the premium architecture for the 9-5 sedan and wagon replacements and the next-generation 9-3.
- The small-vehicle architecture project, launched in February 2002, is being developed by about 100 Opel and Fiat engineers in Turin, Italy. The platform will debut on the 2005 Fiat Punto replacement, which also will serve as the 2006 Palio world car successor. The 2006-07 Opel Corsa replacement also will be derived from the platform, followed by successors to the Lancia Ypsilon, Fiat Idea and Opel Meriva.
Ulrich Schmalohr, Opel's chief engineer for small cars, is in charge of the small team. Fiat Auto engineer Giorgio Cornacchia is the project's chief engineer.
