DETROIT (Reuters) - The Detroit auto show has seen a lot of concept cars over the decades, but a four-wheel motorcycle powered by a 500-horsepower V-10 engine is a first.
And it may turn out to be more than a concept.

DaimlerChrysler AG's DCX.N DCXGn.DE Chrysler arm on Monday unveiled the Dodge Tomahawk -- essentially the 8.3 liter engine from a Dodge Viper mated to a motorcycle frame. Chrysler executives said while the chrome-draped Tomahawk was outlandish, they were seriously considering whether to build a few hundred at a price of at least $250,000 each.

'This is for people who are passionate about engines,' said Chrysler Chief Operating Officer Wolfgang Bernhard, who rode the Tomahawk on stage during a media preview. 'A motorcycle is the most beautiful way to showcase an engine.'

The 1,500-pound Tomahawk can reach 60 miles an hour in about 2.5 seconds, and has a theoretical top speed of 300 mph. Each pair of wheels is separated by a few inches and each wheel has an independent suspension. Bernhard said four wheels were necessary to handle the power from the engine.

Chrysler executives said if the Tomahawk were put into production, it would draw attention to the Dodge brand in ways no ordinary sports car could. Bernhard said a decision on whether to build the Tomahawk could be made in several months.

Μην κανεις τετοια. Τους δινεις ευκαιρια να αρχισουν παλι. Κι ας μην σοβαρολογεις.

Για αυτους που καταλαβαινουν πως σκεφτοντε οι αυτοκινητοβιομηχανιες (ναι εγω ειμαι ενας απο αυτος...ετσι θελω να νομιζω), η DOdge κανει με το παραπανω αυτο που εκανε και με το Βάιπερ. Τοτε που ο, τωρα της Τζι Εμ, Bob Lutz, ειχε παρει τα ινια της Κράισλερ για να την φερει πισω απο την σιγουρη καταστροφη. Αυτο που ειπε ο Μπομ ηταν οτι πρεπει να φτιαξουμε ενα αυτοκινητο image, το οποιο δεν χρειαζεται να ειναι κερδοφορο. Περιορισμενης κατασκευης και με τα κλασσικα ΗΠΑμερικανικα χαρακτηριστικα των muscle cars. Ομως μονο με τα απαρετητα εξτρα. Εαν θυμαστε τα πρωτα Βαιπερ δεν ειχαν καν χειρολαβες για να ανηξει η πορτα απο εξω. Τα παραθυρα ηταν χειροκινητα, δεν υπηρχε AC, κτλ.

Μετα φυσικα αλλαξαν τα πραγματα διοτι το αυτοκινητο ειχε τετοια επιτυχια που και κερδοφορο εγινε αλλα και πολυ-αγαπημενο αλλα και συμβολο της Dodge εδω και ως Chrysler στο εξωτερικο (Ευρωπη).

Ετσι και με το Tomahawk πιο πανω. Οταν παρουσιαζεις κατι εξωπραγματικο, αλλαζει η αντιληψη της αγορας για το το ονομα της εταιριας. Πριν ελεγαν Dodge, τωρα λενε DODGE!

Επιταχύνει από στάση (100χλμ./ώρα) σε δυόμισι δευτερόλεπτα και η τελική του ταχύτητα υπερβαίνει τα 500χλμ./ώρα: Αυτά είναι τα διαπιστευτήρια του πιο... υπερβολικού τετράτροχου που εκτίθεται αυτές τις ημέρες στο Detroit και φέρει την υπογραφή της Dodge!

To -ή, για άλλους, η- Tomahawk αποτελεί, σύμφωνα με τους δημιουργούς του, έναν εξαιρετικό συνδυασμό κορυφαίων τεχνολογικών λύσεων και αισθητικής 'art-deco', θυμίζοντας 'κινούμενο γλυπτό' Για την ακρίβεια πάντως, αυτό το εντυπωσιακό 'μονοθέσιο' παραπέμπει περισσότερο σε αγώνες dragster και ταινίες με ήρωα τον Mad Max παρά σε έκθεμα μουσείου μοντέρνας τέχνης.

Ο θηριώδης V10 κινητήρας των 500 ίππων προέρχεται από το Chrysler Viper και τα 8.300κ.εκ. όχι απλώς εκτινάσσουν το Tomahawk στο... άπειρο, αλλά και του χαρίζουν το 'ειδικό' βάρος των... 681 κιλών, τιμή διόλου ευκαταφρόνητη για 'μοτοσικλέτα' με τέσσερις τροχούς.

Για να ακινητοποιηθεί το μήκους 2,6 μέτρων θηρίο, έχουν τοποθετηθεί δισκόφρενα διαμέτρου 50 εκατοστών σε κάθε τροχό με δύο τετραπίστονες δαγκάνες σε καθέναν από τους μπροστινούς και από μια επίσης τετραπίστονη δαγκάνα στους πίσω.

'Θέλαμε το Tomahawk να κλέψει την παράσταση στον τομέα του πρωτοποριακού σχεδιασμού και να κερδίσει το παιχνίδι των εντυπώσεων ανάμεσα στα concept car, όπως ακριβώς ξέρει να κάνει η Dodge και η -μητρική της- Chrysler' δηλώνουν περήφανα οι ιθύνοντες της αμερικανικής φίρμας. Αμφιβάλλετε ότι τα κατάφεραν;
