PRESS RELEASE
2009 FIA World Rally Championship
Round 3 - Cyprus Rally - 13-15 March 2009CYPRUS BREAKS NEW GROUND IN WRC RETURN
With rally fans already celebrating the return of the Cyprus Rally to next year’s FIA World Rally Championship (WRC), excitement levels ratcheted up another notch today with confirmation that the 2009 Cyprus Rally will be a mixed surface event. A WRC first!
The organizers of the Cyprus event, the Cyprus Automobile Association (CAA), have been quick to take advantage of the WRC commission’s ruling allowing events to incorporate alternate surfaces. The CAA has confirmed that it has designed Day 1 of next March’s Cyprus Rally as an asphalt leg, while Days 2 and 3 will continue to offer the sort of challenging gravel stages for which the event is renowned.
Clerk of the Course Takis Kyriakides spoke about the announcement today: “This is great news for competitors and spectators alike and is a great way to mark our return to the WRC. We’re already excited about welcoming the WRC back to Cyprus next year, and this adds a little extra spice to our event. We’ll be leading the way in world rallying by being the first to test out this new itinerary and I’ve already been contacted by the organisers of other WRC events who are all keen to see how we deal with the challenge so that they can incorporate it into their events. Cyprus is a holiday island with a strong rallying legacy and our ability to host a mixed-surface event such as this shows how much our island continues to offer to the world of motorsport.”
The Cyprus Rally will be one of 4 events rewarding points for next year’s Junior and Production WRC championships and the news that a third of the event is to be run on asphalt is sure to cheer the crews, especially those tackling the Rally in 2-wheel-drive vehicles. Plus, the new format will mean minimal double-use of gravel stages.

According to Spanish website marca.com states that Carlos Sainz could be the leading figure (team principal) of the VW Motorsport WRC opperation if Volkswagen decide to commit to the 2011 World Rally Championship as is widely believed. Current Citroen factory driver Dani Sordo has been linked to a drive with the team.
The base model would be the Scirocco although the FIA have apparently turned down a request from VW to change the regulations and allow the Scirocco to be 1810mm wide as the FIA's limit is 1800mm at present. It isn't clear yet how VW Motorsport have responded to the FIA's stance.
Senior VW Motorsport figures including team director Kris Nissen have attended various recent WRC rounds and have been in dialogue with the FIA about a possible WRC entry in 2011.

'Subaru is dead. It is dead. The problem is the same as Audi had - and still has. The engine is in the wrong position,' he explained.
Airikkala meanwhile also criticised Ford and where the M-Sport-run outfit has the spare wheel or wheels: 'No, Mikko [Hirvonen] won't win the title this season - and there are three main reasons why,' continued the 1989 RAC winner. 'First, Citroen has a lot better engine. They have got the best engine in the sport. That is quite clear to see. They have a more powerful engine and engine power matters.
'Secondly, they have got the spare wheel in the right place. All the Ford Focus' have the spare wheel in the end of the car - and weight distribution is important. Where Ford has it, it makes the Focus very difficult to drive. It is very slow to react and when it does react, it is then tough to get it back. Citroen doesn't have that. They have the spare wheel more or less in the middle of the car.
Also, they have softer suspension than the Focus. So even if you are a better driver than Sebastien Loeb you can't beat him. I would love to see him driving a Ford Focus and I'd like to see Mikko or Jari-Matti driving a Citroen. That would be exciting to see. But at the moment Sebastien has got the better car.'ΠΗΓΗ:crash.net

'Why don't we support the events that are doing well and then let them stay on the calendar? It is all political and that is why they are rotating them. It is basically because [FIA president] Max Mosley wants to have various countries in so they will vote for him - and one way to do that is to say: 'I will give you a WRC event'. All kinds of countries are coming up - but it is not good for the sport.' -

Six Subarus in the WRC next year?
'The Subaru World Rally Team is considering doubling the number of cars it runs on WRC rallies next season to allow two new drivers to join next year’s confirmed line-up of Petter Solberg and Chris Atkinson.
The extra cars are in addition to the two SWRT-supported cars to be run by the Norwegian Adapta team, raising the possibility that three times the present number of Impreza World Rally Cars will compete in 2009.
In an interview with wrc.com Subaru World Rally Team managing director Richard Taylor said he would like to see ‘five or six’ Subaru World Rally Cars in the Championship next year and was talking to a number of drivers, including Brice Tirabassi and Guy Wilks, about possible seats within an expanded SWRT or ‘in-house’ M2 team...'
Taylor said he expected the situation to become clearer in the next few weeks.Βέβαια όσα και να βάλουν αν δεν βελτιωθούν δεν θα έχει και πολλή σημασία...!!!!
