UNVEILED IN DETROIT
Concept: TRIANT
Engine: 3.5-liter DOHC V6 engineWhat the automaker says: 'The dramatic Triant concept ... captures the spirit of Infiniti and recent innovative designs such as the FX45 and G35 -- sporty, luxurious and highly personal. As an exploration of a new market niche, the Triant concept is designed to fit active lifestyles. It offers a combination of performance, luxury and practicality with a high level of both on-road and off-road capabilities. Triant's styling offers the look and feel of a classic sports coupe, with a long, elegant hood, sharply sloped windshield and hatchback and oversize wheelwells stuffed with large wheels and tires. It also features wide, power-assisted gullwing doors and headlights that 'guide' the beam around turns with the aid of digital mapping data and GPS technology.'
Vehicle: FX45
Model year: 2003
Manufacturer: Infiniti
Wheelbase: 112.2 in.
Length: 189.1 in.
Width: 75.8 in.
Height: 65.0 in.
Engine: 32-valve 4.5-liter DOHC V8
Horsepower: 315
Estimated torque: 329 lb.-ftWhat the automaker says: 'The all-wheel drive FX45 is powered by a 315-horsepower 4.5-liter V8 (based on the class-leading 2002 Infiniti Q45 powerplant) and features standard 20-inch wheels and tires, leather seating and a sport-tuned 4-wheel independent suspension. Also offered is a 280-horsepower 3.5-liter V6-equipped version, the FX35, available in all-wheel or optional rear-wheel drive. The FX35 V6 is shared with the award-winning Infiniti G35 sport coupe and sport sedan. All FX45 models utilize a modified version of the advanced FM (Front Mid-ship) platform enhanced for SUV duties. A similar, less modified version of this platform is also found in the G35 sport coupe and sport sedan.'
What you should know: After 13 years of dishing out sedans and coupes and a traditional sport-utility, Nissan's luxury division is set to serve up something new: A 315-hp blend of sports car and utility vehicle that will try to carve 30,000 sales a year from the most crowded field in the U.S. automotive landscape: the so-called crossover vehicle. The FX45 is not Infiniti's version of the Murano, Nissan's sport wagon that went on sale in November. The Murano is built on Nissan's FF-L (Altima/Maxima/Quest) platform and is driven either by the front wheels or all wheels. The FX45 is all-wheel drive, and its less powerful FX35 sibling is either awd or rear-wheel drive. They are built on an 'enhanced' version of Nissan's FM platform, where the engine rests longitudinally behind the front axle.
